Berlin University Alliance to Receive Continued Funding
Berlin, March 17 – The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) has once again secured continued funding, solidifying its outstanding reputation within the German research landscape. This decision, announced yesterday, March 16, by the Excellence Committee, marks the second time the consortium has been recognized as “excellent” within the German federal and state governments’ Excellence Strategy. The BUA, composed of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, is seen as a crucial driver for Berlin’s strategic potential as a hub of knowledge and innovation.
A Unique Collaboration in Germany
Professor Günter M. Ziegler, president of Freie Universität Berlin and official spokesperson of the Berlin University Alliance, expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the continued success. “So far there has not been another project quite like the Berlin University Alliance in all of Germany,” stated Professor Ziegler. He emphasized the unprecedented degree of openness and collaboration among the four major institutions, working together towards common strategic and long-term goals.
Professor Ziegler highlighted that this collaboration extends far beyond traditional partnerships, thriving on a “deep sense of togetherness” fostered by continuous idea sharing, mutual learning, and a unified approach to projects. He underscored the collective effort, stating, “It is this spirit of curiosity and openness that breathes life into the Berlin University Alliance – as well as our conviction that we can accomplish more when we work together than if we work alone.”
Contributions from Across the University Community
The success of the Berlin University Alliance is attributed to significant contributions from colleagues and students across all participating universities. Their involvement spans various areas, including research, teaching, student projects, infrastructure development, strategic initiatives, and academic exchange. This collaborative spirit has transcended traditional institutional and disciplinary boundaries, demonstrating a collective dedication, creativity, and willingness to cooperate.
Professor Ziegler acknowledged these efforts, noting, “Your dedication, creativity, and willingness to collaborate contributed significantly to bringing us this far and achieving this milestone today.” He expressed hope that this success is perceived as a shared victory by all involved, opening up new opportunities for the universities, their partners, and for Berlin as a pivotal location for research and science for years to come.
Strengthening Berlin’s Position as a Research Hub
The continued funding for the Berlin University Alliance is expected to further strengthen Berlin’s reputation as a leading hub of knowledge and innovation. The consortium’s ongoing work is vital for advancing scientific discovery, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and attracting top talent to the region. This sustained investment in the BUA underscores the commitment to excellence in research and education within the German capital.
The BUA’s model of intensive collaboration among multiple universities and a major medical institution serves as a benchmark for other research initiatives. Its success demonstrates the power of synergistic partnerships in achieving ambitious academic and societal goals. The renewed funding will enable the Alliance to pursue new research avenues, enhance its educational programs, and continue to contribute significantly to the global scientific community.
The Freie Universität Berlin, one of the key members of the Alliance, upholds its founding values of veritas, justitia, and libertas (truth, justice, and liberty), which have defined its academic ethos since December 1948. These values continue to guide the university’s participation in the BUA, fostering an environment of open inquiry and intellectual freedom.
The re-endorsement of the Berlin University Alliance as an “excellent” consortium is a testament to its impactful work and its potential to drive future advancements in science and innovation, benefiting not only Berlin but also the broader national and international research landscape.
