Berlin University Alliance Secures Renewed Funding, Bolstering Berlin’s Research Hub
Berlin, March 12 – The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) has once again secured funding as an ‘Excellence Cluster’ within Germany’s Excellence Strategy, reaffirming its leading role in the national research landscape. This marks the second time the Excellence Commission has recognized the strategic capabilities of Berlin’s scientific and innovation ecosystem, which comprises the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
A Unique Collaborative Project in Germany
Professor Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, President of Freie Universität Berlin and spokesperson for the BUA, emphasized the unique nature of the project. ‘The Berlin University Alliance is a project that is currently unique in Germany. Four large institutions – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin – work together strategically, long-term, and with great openness,’ stated Dr. Ziegler.
He further elaborated on the depth of this collaboration, noting, ‘This cooperation goes far beyond classic partnerships: it thrives on sharing ideas, learning from each other, and tackling projects with combined strength.’ This sentiment highlights the alliance’s commitment to fostering a dynamic environment where institutions collectively drive innovation and knowledge creation.
Collective Effort Drives Success
Dr. Ziegler underscored the significant contributions of individuals across the participating universities. ‘This success is primarily your success! In recent years, many colleagues and students from all areas of the university have dedicated themselves to the Berlin University Alliance with great commitment – in research, teaching, student projects, infrastructure projects, strategic initiatives, and in scientific exchange across institutional and disciplinary boundaries,’ he acknowledged.
He attributed the alliance’s achievement to the collective dedication, creativity, and willingness to collaborate among its members. ‘Your commitment, your creativity, and your willingness to cooperate have played a decisive role in achieving this important milestone,’ Dr. Ziegler added.
A Spirit of Curiosity and Openness
The Berlin University Alliance, according to Dr. Ziegler, embodies a particular ethos. ‘The Berlin University Alliance thrives on precisely this spirit: of curiosity, openness, and the conviction that together we can achieve more than alone,’ he explained. This philosophy is central to the alliance’s continued success and its ability to push the boundaries of research and education.
The renewed funding presents a significant opportunity for the coming years, not only for the individual universities but also for their partners and for Berlin as a prominent scientific hub. ‘The fact that we can continue on this path is a great opportunity for the coming years – for our university, for our partners, and for Berlin as a scientific location. For this, I thank you all very much,’ Dr. Ziegler concluded.
Impact on Berlin’s Scientific Landscape
The continued support for the BUA reinforces Berlin’s position as a leading center for research and innovation. The alliance’s collaborative model, bringing together diverse academic and medical institutions, fosters interdisciplinary research and addresses complex societal challenges. This sustained investment is expected to further enhance the city’s attractiveness for top-tier researchers and students globally, solidifying its reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking scientific ecosystem.
The BUA’s success in securing renewed funding for the second time is a testament to its effectiveness in promoting cutting-edge research, fostering academic excellence, and contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge. The alliance’s model of strategic, long-term collaboration serves as a benchmark for other research initiatives, demonstrating the power of collective effort in achieving ambitious scientific goals.
The Freie Universität Berlin, founded in December 1948, operates under the core values of truth, justice, and freedom, principles that continue to guide its participation and contributions within the Berlin University Alliance.
