Mokka-Milch-Eisbar in Berlin Temporarily Closed After Overwhelming Reopening
Berlin, June 1st – The recently reopened Mokka-Milch-Eisbar on Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin-Mitte has temporarily ceased operations, just three days after its grand reopening. The closure, attributed to technical issues and an unexpectedly high volume of visitors, has left patrons waiting for their coffee and ice cream. The establishment is expected to reopen on June 12th.
Technical Glitches and Unforeseen Crowds Force Closure
On Sunday morning, several disappointed individuals were seen peering through the closed doors of the Mokka-Milch-Eisbar, hoping to enjoy coffee and ice cream. However, the venue, a popular meeting spot during the GDR era, had already closed its doors. The primary reasons cited for this abrupt closure are technical problems, including a malfunctioning coffee machine, and an unprecedented rush of customers that overwhelmed the operators during the first two days of business.
Soft Opening Turns into ‘Hard Opening’ with 800 Guests
The Mokka-Milch-Eisbar, now operating under the name ‘mokka*milch’, had its ‘soft opening’ on May 28th, after an initial delay from May 23rd due to ongoing construction work. Natacha Neumann, co-owner with her husband Alexander Neumann, described the opening as more of a ‘hard opening’ due to the sheer number of guests. “Around 800 guests came,” Neumann told Morgenpost. While a soft opening is typically meant for the team to acclimate under relaxed conditions, the influx of hundreds of guests made this impossible. “We had just finished with the construction work,” Neumann explained. “We didn’t have a chance to properly run through things.”
Power Outages and Broken Coffee Machines Add to Challenges
In addition to the overwhelming crowds, the technology also failed. There was a power outage, and subsequently, the coffee machine broke down. “Some guests waited 15 minutes in the sun for a drink. That does not meet the standards we set for ourselves. We were not happy with what we delivered,” Neumann admitted. Faced with these challenges and two consecutive days of 800 guests, the operators made the decision to close temporarily on Saturday.
Team to Optimize Operations for June 12th Reopening
Despite the initial setbacks, the Neumanns remain confident. “We can do this. But we first need to warm up and fix the technical problems,” said Natacha Neumann. The team continued to sell ice cream in front of the premises on Saturday and even hosted a birthday party for 40 people, not wanting to disappoint them with a last-minute cancellation. The operators plan to use the closure period to carry out repairs and optimize service procedures. The Mokka-Milch-Eisbar is scheduled to reopen on June 12th.
Positive Feedback and Community Support
Even during the temporary closure, staff members were seen greeting passers-by and explaining the situation, offering vouchers for a scoop of ice cream to be redeemed upon reopening. The Neumanns expressed gratitude for the understanding and encouragement they received from the public. “Someone once told me: It has to work from the start, because Berliners are tough and don’t forgive. But Berlin has shown me that’s not the case at all. This gives us a lot of energy and motivation,” Natacha Neumann shared.
The Mokka-Milch-Eisbar, a significant part of Berlin’s history, is now preparing for a smoother re-launch, aiming to once again become a beloved spot in the heart of the city.
