Berlin’s Radio Tower Celebrates 100 Years with Special Events
Berlin, September 2 – The iconic Berlin Radio Tower, officially opened on September 3, 1926, is marking its 100th anniversary with a diverse program of events organized by Messe Berlin. Several special activities are planned for the remainder of the year to commemorate this significant milestone.
Podcast and Ticket Giveaway to Mark the Occasion
To kick off the celebrations, Messe Berlin will release a one-hour podcast on September 3. The podcast will feature Michael Pfeiffer, Messe Berlin’s department head, sharing personal anecdotes and fascinating insights into the history of the Radio Tower. Additionally, between September 3 and 7, Messe Berlin will be giving away 100 tickets, offering winners free access to the observation deck at a height of 126 meters.
1920s Anniversary Night and Morse Code Light Message
On October 10, the Radio Tower restaurant will host a 1920s Anniversary Night. This special event will feature a themed dinner and live music, immersing guests in the atmosphere of the 1920s. In November, the tower will once again transmit signals, but this time not radio waves. A message in Morse code will be sent across the Berlin sky using light signals, offering another chance for participants to win prizes if they can decipher it.
Observation Deck and Restaurant Accessibility
Even without winning a ticket, the observation deck remains open to visitors on most days. Tickets can be purchased online through the Messe Berlin website. The restaurant, offering a unique dining experience, is open every weekend.
A Century of History and Innovation
The Radio Tower, constructed over two years, was inaugurated on September 3, 1926, during the third Grand German Radio Exhibition, which later evolved into the IFA consumer electronics show. This year, the 100th anniversary coincides with the start of the IFA exhibition, which runs from September 4 to September 8, located directly at the Messe Berlin exhibition grounds, adjacent to the Radio Tower.
