BVG Enhances Safety with Colorful Emergency Pillars in Berlin Metro
Berlin, July 22 – The Berlin public transport company (BVG) is introducing brightly colored emergency and information pillars in its U-Bahn stations to improve visibility and enhance passenger safety. This initiative is part of a new pilot project, “Pink*Zone,” which commenced yesterday, July 21, 2026. The goal is to make it easier for passengers to locate these crucial safety points in times of need.
Pilot Project “Pink*Zone” Launched in Key Stations
The BVG has begun testing these eye-catching markings in the U-Bahn stations of Alexanderplatz, Kurfürstenstraßße, and Britz-Süd. Today, the stations Walther-Schreiber-Platz and Osloer Straßße are also set to receive these colorful additions. Each station features a different color scheme, including pink, yellow, blue, and red, to maximize their prominence within the station environment.
Passengers are encouraged to provide their feedback on the new markings via a QR code. Should the initial feedback be positive, the BVG plans to extend the “Pink*Zone” concept to emergency pillars in other stations across the city. According to the BVG, there are approximately 570 such pillars distributed throughout Berlin, primarily located in U-Bahn stations. These pillars serve as direct communication points to the BVG’s security control center, allowing anyone feeling unwell or requiring assistance to reach help instantly with the push of a button.
Significant Reduction in Crime Rates
This safety enhancement comes on the heels of a positive trend in crime statistics within the BVG network. The BVG reported that criminal offenses in its vehicles and stations reached their lowest level in over a decade last year. This positive development has continued into the first half of 2026, with registered criminal offenses decreasing by approximately 16 percent compared to the same period last year.
The BVG attributes this sustained reduction in crime to its comprehensive security strategy, of which the “Pink*Zone” pilot project is the latest component. This strategy encompasses various measures aimed at creating a safer environment for all passengers using Berlin’s public transport system.
