BVG Challenges Paris: Berlin is the “True City of Love”

Berlin, August 25 – The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has launched a new marketing campaign that boldly questions Paris’s long-held reputation as the “City of Love,” asserting that the “true city of love” is, in fact, located on the Spree. The initiative, revealed today, includes a nearly two-minute promotional film that playfully pokes fun at Parisian clichés while highlighting Berlin’s unique expressions of affection.

The campaign’s central film contrasts typical romantic imagery associated with Paris with authentic Berlin scenes. For instance, while Paris boasts the Mona Lisa, Berlin features bus driver Mona, who is shown gazing lovingly after a passenger named Carsten. The video also depicts a gay couple kissing on the remnants of the Berlin Wall and a heavily pierced couple in the subway, showcasing the city’s diverse and edgy romantic landscape.

Unconventional Love: From Wannsee to Public Transport

Further examples of Berlin’s “true love” presented in the campaign include nude bathing in Wannsee and carrying flowers on crowded public transport for a date. These scenarios, according to the BVG, demonstrate that there’s no need to travel to Paris to experience genuine love.

Ineke Paulsen, BVG’s Marketing Director, explained the campaign’s ethos: “We wanted to celebrate Berlin as we experience it every day. With its rough edges and, above all, with the people who make it what it is.”

Campaign Rollout and Duration

The image film, along with several shorter clips, is set to be released on the BVG’s social media channels starting today. Additionally, posters featuring scenes from the film will be displayed throughout the city, further amplifying the campaign’s message.

The creative force behind this campaign is a Hamburg-based agency, though the BVG has not disclosed the costs associated with its development. The campaign is scheduled to run until September 10.

BVG’s History of Unconventional Campaigns

The BVG has gained a reputation in recent years for its unconventional and self-deprecating advertising campaigns. Previous notable initiatives include a call for the Berlin U-Bahn network to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscoring the transport company’s innovative approach to public relations and marketing.

This latest campaign continues the BVG’s tradition of engaging with its audience through humor and a strong sense of local identity, aiming to foster pride in Berlin’s unique character and public transport system.
