BVG Tests Innovative Radio Technology for Enhanced Subway Accuracy in Berlin

Berlin, February 19 – Passengers on Berlin’s subway system can anticipate more precise train arrival information in the near future. Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and MOXZ have commenced testing a “globally innovative” radio technology within the subway network, as announced in a recent press release.

Locating Subways in Tunnels with Meter-Level Accuracy

The primary objective of this pilot project is to accurately locate underground trains in real-time, even when they are within tunnels, with meter-level precision. “This will lead to more accurate arrival displays on platforms, and the control center will be able to monitor operations down to the second,” stated BVG. Initial tests have already begun on the U2 line.

For this project, subways and stations are being outfitted with specially developed radio devices. This advanced system will enable continuous determination of a train’s exact location, its speed, and the precise number of seconds remaining until it reaches the next station.

Smart Innovations as a Central Component of Reliable Operations

Henrik Falk, CEO of BVG, emphasized the importance of such advancements, stating, “Smart innovations are a key component of stable and reliable operations.” He further elaborated, “If we can successfully locate trains precisely at all times, even in tunnels, both our control centers and our passengers will benefit-through more up-to-date displays, better forecasts, and greater transparency in operations.”

Currently, platforms in Berlin’s underground stations feature displays indicating the minutes until the arrival of the next train, and often the subsequent one. While generally helpful, these displays have not always been consistently reliable. The new technology aims to significantly enhance this reliability and accuracy.

This initiative underscores BVG’s commitment to improving the efficiency and passenger experience of Berlin’s extensive subway system. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the transport operator aims to provide a more predictable and transparent service for the millions of commuters and visitors who rely on the U-Bahn daily.

The successful implementation of this system could set a new standard for urban public transport, offering a model for other cities grappling with the complexities of real-time train tracking in underground environments. The project’s outcome is eagerly awaited by both transport experts and the commuting public in Berlin.
