CFS-Kids-Mobil Launches in Hamburg to Aid Children with ME/CFS
Hamburg, February 4, 2026 – A new mobile support service, the CFS-Kids-Mobil, officially launched in Hamburg on Wednesday to assist families with children suffering from ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). This severe chronic fatigue syndrome can develop as a post-infectious condition, including as a form of Long COVID.
Kirsten Mainzer from the KinderVersorgungsNetz Hamburg, the non-profit organization behind the initiative, stated that 20 families are already on the waiting list for the CFS-Kids-Mobil. These families have children so severely affected by the illness that they can barely leave their homes due to extreme weakness and other debilitating symptoms.
Multi-Professional Teams to Provide Comprehensive Support
The affected families will receive assistance from multi-professional teams comprising pediatricians, nurses, psychologists, and other therapeutic specialists. Mainzer emphasized that the primary focus is on accompanying and supporting the families, rather than providing intensive medical care. Initially, funding and resources for the service are secured for a period of six months.
The KinderVersorgungsNetz, which has been supporting families with chronically ill children for over a decade, describes the CFS-Kids-Mobil project as unique across Germany. This initiative aims to fill a critical gap in the care landscape for children with ME/CFS.
Understanding ME/CFS: A Complex and Under-Researched Illness
ME/CFS is a serious neurological disorder characterized by profound fatigue that is not alleviated by rest, post-exertional malaise (worsening of symptoms after physical or mental activity), unrefreshing sleep, and cognitive impairment. It can be triggered by various infections, with Long COVID being one of the more recent and recognized forms. Despite its debilitating nature, ME/CFS remains poorly understood and under-researched.
