Concerns Rise Over Substandard Replacement Buses on Hamburg-Berlin Route

Berlin, April 4, 2026 – Thousands of commuters daily relying on replacement buses for the Hamburg-Berlin rail route are raising serious concerns about the safety and quality of the vehicles. Operator Ecovista, responsible for the bus service during the major railway line renovation, has recently replaced its fleet, leading to a wave of complaints about worn tires, missing electrical covers, and even mold inside the buses.

Bus Fleet Replacement Sparks Outcry Amidst Rail Renovation

For the past seven months, Ecovista has been providing substitute buses for the crucial Hamburg-Berlin connection, a route undergoing extensive general renovation. The company announced a fleet change over the weekend, citing modifications to a leasing agreement. However, this transition has been met with strong criticism from passengers and a stern response from Deutsche Bahn.

Passengers have reported alarming conditions, including “completely bald tires” and “missing electrical covers.” Some have described encountering mold on seats and window frames, accompanied by a “musty smell” inside the buses. Ecovista has acknowledged that some older buses are now in use due to the fleet exchange but states they are being progressively replaced with newer models. Following inquiries from NDR, the bus operator committed to thoroughly inspecting the buses and addressing the reported deficiencies as quickly as possible.

Deutsche Bahn Demands Immediate Action

The German Rail (Deutsche Bahn) has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with the situation, issuing a warning to Ecovista. Gerd-Dietrich Bolte, a board member of DB InfraGo, stated on Monday, “We are doing everything we can to find a reliable and high-quality solution for passengers, but we will not be blackmailed.” Deutsche Bahn has set a deadline for Ecovista to immediately reintroduce the contractually agreed-upon buses, ensuring sufficient space and clear passenger information.

Adding to the concerns, the new fleet, deployed since Sunday, includes more long-distance coaches instead of the usual line buses. Some of these vehicles do not feature the familiar purple branding, and real-time tracking via the app is currently unavailable. This lack of real-time information poses significant challenges for passengers, particularly when transferring or dealing with delays. Ecovista has pledged to rectify the app functionality promptly.

Extended Rail Renovation and Financial Pressures

Ecovista maintains that the bus exchange is unrelated to the extended duration of the Hamburg-Berlin rail line renovation. The operator asserts its ability to continue providing replacement services beyond April 30. However, the rail line’s renovation is now expected to take longer than initially planned, a consequence, according to Deutsche Bahn, of a frosty winter. DB InfraGo recently indicated that the resumption of regular train services by April 30 is no longer feasible, with a new timetable expected to be announced on March 13.

According to Wolfgang Blank, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister of Economics (non-party affiliated), the disruption caused by the bus issues should not be borne by the travelers. Ecovista claims to transport approximately 30,000 passengers daily on the route, utilizing around 200 buses and 500 drivers.

The ongoing situation highlights the complexities and challenges of large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly when relying on third-party service providers. The focus now remains on Ecovista to address the pressing safety and quality concerns, ensuring a reliable and comfortable journey for the thousands of passengers affected daily by the essential rail renovation.
