Concordia Hamburg Secures Two Top Strikers for Oberliga Promotion

Hamburg, July 8 – Concordia Hamburg, fresh off their promotion to the Oberliga Hamburg, has announced the acquisition of two prominent strikers, Mihai-Vladut Bitez and Caleb Kakra Awuah. This strategic move aims to bolster the team’s offensive capabilities as they prepare to compete in Germany’s fifth tier of football.

The promotion was achieved with sporting prowess, yet the subsequent planning proved to be anything but straightforward. Concordia Hamburg faced an uphill battle to secure funding for their Oberliga debut after winning the Landesliga Hansa championship. A crowdfunding campaign, community support, and benefit matches, such as the 2-3 loss against Altona 93, have been instrumental in preparing for the upcoming season.

A Formidable Striking Duo

Despite the challenging financial backdrop, the Oberliga returnee has made remarkable sporting preparations. With the signings of Mihai-Vladut Bitez and Caleb Kakra Awuah, Concordia brings in two proven goal-scorers to the Bekkamp stadium. Both are classic central strikers, yet they differ in their playing styles, suggesting they could complement each other exceptionally well. Coach Baris Saglam now commands an attacking duo that has consistently produced goals in recent years.

Bitez Achieves His Long-Held Goal

Mihai-Vladut Bitez’s transfer carries particular significance. The 33-year-old was the standout goal-scorer in the Landesliga Hansa last season. For Rahlstedter SC, he netted an impressive 36 goals in 25 appearances, according to FuPa data. Overall, the ambidextrous forward boasts an incredible record of 210 goals in 188 matches.

His path to the Oberliga had previously seemed fraught with disappointment. A planned move to SC Vorwärts/Wacker Billstedt fell through. However, Bitez made it clear in an interview with FuPa that he would not abandon his ambition: “I told myself that from summer onwards, I wanted to move to the Oberliga and continue trying to score my goals there.” After the initial rejection, he stated: “Unfortunately, they turned me down, but I won’t give up on finding another club and playing there.” Now, Bitez has achieved this goal. Instead of Vorwärts/Wacker, the Landesliga top scorer will now be hunting for goals in the Oberliga for the first time with Concordia.

Awuah Brings Oberliga Experience

Caleb Kakra Awuah, on the other hand, is already familiar with the Oberliga. The forward most recently played for HT 16, scoring six goals in 21 appearances last season. His particular strength was evident in previous years, where he played a significant role in the sporting ascent of the world’s oldest sports club.

In the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, Awuah scored 51 goals in 54 Landesliga matches. Overall, he has 116 goals in 162 appearances. These statistics clearly indicate that he is far more than just an ordinary addition to Concordia’s offense. The 28-year-old brings physicality, finishing quality, and the experience of a full Oberliga season. While Bitez is making his debut in Hamburg’s highest league, Awuah already understands the intensity and challenges that await him there.

Coach Saglam does not view either player as an immobile penalty box striker. In an interview with Transfermarkt, the coach explained that Concordia is acquiring two classic number nines who can also participate in combination play. This perfectly aligns with the promoted team’s ambitious playing philosophy.

Saglam Emphasizes the Collective

As impressive as the individual goal-scoring records are, Saglam does not want to focus solely on his two new attackers. “We thrive on the collective, and our strengths also lie in consistently prioritizing and fostering togetherness,” the coach told TM. Bitez is an important player, but like any goal-scorer, he needs the right service. The finishing prowess of the new duo has already been demonstrated in training: “We’ve already seen in training: if they get the chance, they put them away.”

For Concordia, this combination opens up many possibilities. Bitez brings years of consistent goal-scoring and immense experience. Awuah is younger, physically present, and familiar with the Oberliga. Both can play centrally but are not to be limited to just the final touch in the penalty area.

Quality Despite Difficult Conditions

That Concordia can sign players of this quality is remarkable given their financial situation. After their deserved promotion, the club initially lacked the funds for registration fees, organizational costs, and the demands of Oberliga operations. A fundraising campaign initiated by the team’s environment was crucial in enabling them to take their place in the league.

The team is also fully committed to the shared journey. Saglam explicitly thanked the players via Transfermarkt, who, despite the obstacles and special challenges, accepted financial compromises. “We told ourselves that we want to continue developing what we have built together as much as possible. And at this point, monetary considerations take a back seat.”

It is precisely within this tension that the unique story of the Oberliga newcomer lies. Concordia is not financially flush and remains dependent on help, solidarity, and creative solutions. Nevertheless, the club is managing to assemble a squad that does not simply have to hope for survival. The promoted team therefore remains a difficult team to assess. Saglam himself describes his team as a “surprise egg.” However, one thing is already clear: if the new striking duo receives the necessary service, Concordia possesses a weapon in the fight for survival that not many competitors can boast.
