New U3 Subway Station at Fuhlsbüttler Straße in Hamburg Receives Final Approval
Hamburg, April 3 – The long-anticipated new subway station on the U3 line, located at Fuhlsbüttler Straße in the Barmbek-Nord district, has received final planning approval. According to Hochbahn, the plan approval decision has been granted, officially greenlighting the construction project.
Construction is projected to begin in early 2027, with the new station expected to be fully operational by spring 2029. The Fuhlsbüttler Straße station will be situated between the existing Barmbek and Habichtstraße stops and is designed to significantly improve connectivity for approximately 10,000 residents of Barmbek-Nord to Hamburg’s U-Bahn network.
Modern, Sustainable, and Accessible Design
The new station will feature a main entrance, including elevators, at the southern end of Fuhlsbüttler Straße. A second entrance on the west side will primarily serve residential areas north of Genslerstraße and south of Hardorffsweg, enhancing accessibility for a broader community.
A Hochbahn spokesperson emphasized the project’s commitment to modern, sustainable, and barrier-free infrastructure. The Fuhlsbüttler Straße station is planned to incorporate green roofs and a photovoltaic system, aligning with contemporary environmental standards. Additionally, the design includes an open-top platform hall with glazed side walls, contributing to a bright and inviting atmosphere.
The total construction costs for the project are estimated by Hochbahn to be around 39 million Euros.
Impact on Local Commuters and Future Developments
The addition of the Fuhlsbüttler Straße station is a significant development for public transportation in Hamburg. It aims to alleviate congestion and provide more convenient travel options for residents in the Barmbek-Nord area, integrating them more seamlessly into the city’s extensive subway system.
This project is part of Hochbahn’s broader strategy to expand and modernize Hamburg’s public transport infrastructure. While specific details on other major projects for this year primarily affect the U1 and U3 lines with ongoing construction, the Fuhlsbüttler Straße station represents a new permanent addition to the network rather than a temporary disruption.
The approval of this station underscores Hamburg’s commitment to improving urban mobility and sustainability, ensuring that its public transport system continues to meet the evolving needs of its growing population.
