Hamburg, September 8, 2026 – A corn harvester found itself in a precarious 45-degree tilt in Hamburg-Reitbrook yesterday morning, after its driver swerved to avoid a delivery van and drove onto a softened shoulder. The incident prompted a significant response from the Hamburg Fire Department to prevent the heavy machinery from completely overturning.
Close Call for Experienced Driver
The driver, an employee of a local contractor, is reportedly very familiar with the route to a farm on Vorderdeich, having navigated it with agricultural vehicles for approximately 20 years. The incident occurred yesterday morning as he was nearing his destination. To avoid a delivery van, the driver maneuvered the multi-ton corn harvester onto the soft shoulder, causing the vehicle to lose stability and tilt sharply.
Emergency Call and Initial Response
An emergency call was received by the Hamburg Fire Department’s control center around 8:00 AM. Although the driver was able to exit the harvester safely, the vehicle was in imminent danger of toppling over. The control center dispatched the Reitbrook Volunteer Fire Department, the B-Service of the Harburg Fire and Rescue Station, and specialized vehicles and equipment from the Technology and Environmental Protection Station (F 32). Police also arrived at the scene, followed later by the supply component of the FF Eißendorf.
A Challenging Situation for Rescuers
Dirk Crome, the incident commander for the Hamburg Fire Department, described the situation as “extraordinary and a challenge.” The initial phase of the operation involved attaching three heavy-duty straps to tractors belonging to the contractor to stabilize the corn harvester. “It’s at such a steep 45-degree angle that it seems too risky to pull it,” Crome stated, explaining the decision to call in a specialized recovery company.
Complex Recovery Operation Underway
By midday, a telescopic crane and a recovery vehicle were brought to the fully closed Vorderdeich. These specialized units were tasked with taking over the securing of the corn harvester and returning it to an upright position on the road. The street remained closed for the duration of the complex recovery effort.
Focus on Safety and Specialized Equipment
The incident highlights the dangers associated with operating large agricultural machinery, especially on soft ground. The swift and coordinated response by various units of the Hamburg Fire Department, along with the involvement of specialized recovery equipment, underscored the commitment to ensuring public safety and preventing further complications. The use of heavy-duty straps and the decision to await specialized recovery services demonstrate a methodical approach to a potentially hazardous situation.
The eDossier, “Human Rescue from Combine Harvesters,” offers insights into how fire departments can respond to serious accidents involving harvesting machinery. It includes operational examples, hazards, safety measures, and rescue scenarios, providing valuable information for emergency responders.
The incident is a reminder of the importance of vigilance and appropriate safety measures when operating heavy vehicles, particularly in diverse terrain conditions. The successful management of such challenging situations relies on effective communication, specialized training, and access to the right equipment.
