Berlin, April 23, 2026 – Deutsche Bahn has launched a comprehensive deep cleaning initiative across approximately 50 train stations in Berlin. The effort, which began recently, targets the removal of chewing gum, graffiti, and accumulated dirt from various areas including stairs, platforms, elevators, glass surfaces, and ticket machines.
Extensive Cleaning Efforts and Collaboration
Hundreds of Deutsche Bahn employees are actively involved in this extensive cleaning drive. Additionally, numerous volunteers and tenants of station businesses are participating, underscoring a communal effort to improve the cleanliness and appearance of the city’s railway infrastructure. Berlin currently boasts around 130 train stations under Deutsche Bahn’s management.
As part of this initiative, Deutsche Bahn is also collaborating with several Berlin districts, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), and Infravelo, the state-owned company responsible for bicycle infrastructure. This partnership aims to remove numerous derelict bicycles from the vicinity of about 40 train stations.
Michael Fugel, Managing Director of Infravelo, highlighted the importance of this specific action: “Anyone who cycles to the station in the morning wants to transfer as quickly as possible and not have to look for a free spot between junk bikes.” This component of the cleaning operation is designed to enhance the convenience and safety for daily commuters.
Nationwide Program and Investment in Safety and Cleanliness
The spring cleaning in Berlin is part of a broader, nationwide campaign by Deutsche Bahn. By the end of May, approximately 1,400 train stations across Germany are scheduled to undergo similar deep cleaning procedures. This extensive program is supported by an immediate fund of around 50 million euros allocated for enhancing safety and cleanliness throughout the year.
The allocated funds will not only cover intensified cleaning intervals but also facilitate the deployment of additional security personnel at stations. This strategic investment reflects Deutsche Bahn’s commitment to providing a more pleasant and secure environment for its passengers and the general public.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve the aesthetic and functional aspects of Berlin’s train stations, contributing to a better travel experience for the millions of commuters and visitors who use these facilities daily.
