The current heatwave presents an immense burden for homeless people in Hamburg. Without a shaded roof over their heads and readily accessible drinking water, the heat becomes life-threatening, warns the Diakonie Hamburg. The organization is appealing to Hamburg residents to offer water to homeless individuals and to seek medical help if they observe symptoms of heatstroke.
Left Party Demands More Drinking Water Dispensers and Public Cool Spaces
The Left Party places responsibility on the Hamburg Senate. While many volunteers are already distributing water and sun protection, it argues that it is a state responsibility to plan and implement heat protection for vulnerable people. The supply of free drinking water must be significantly expanded, especially in areas frequented by people without permanent housing.
Furthermore, the Left Party demands more shaded public spaces. During extreme heat, district offices, libraries, and museums should also open their doors to provide refuge. The Left Party faction intends to debate these proposals in the Hamburg Parliament soon.
