Munich, April 2, 2026 – The City of Munich’s Building Department is set to begin major reconstruction work on Domagkstraße next week. This extensive project, expected to last until mid-2028, will focus on creating dedicated and wider paths for cyclists and pedestrians, significantly improving traffic safety and comfort along the 1.5-kilometer stretch connecting Leopoldstraße and Ungererstraße.
Enhanced Safety and Comfort for All Road Users
Dr.-Ing. Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, Munich’s Head of Building Department, emphasized the necessity of these improvements in a press release. “With the reconstruction of Domagkstraße, we are increasing safety and comfort for everyone traveling on foot, by bike, or by bus. Anyone familiar with the existing infrastructure knows that narrow pedestrian and cycle paths are no longer adequate for current mobility behavior and the growing volume of bicycle traffic. Wider sidewalks, safe cycle paths, and new barrier-free bus stops will henceforth contribute to a significant improvement in the traffic situation,” she stated.
The project is based on a spatial allocation concept developed by Munich’s Mobility Department. The construction will be carried out in several phases, with the goal of establishing dedicated cycle paths on both sides of the street and expanding existing sidewalks between Leopoldstraße and Ungererstraße by mid-May 2028. The cycle paths between intersections will predominantly be 2.5 meters wide, separated from car traffic by a 50-centimeter safety strip.
Comprehensive Upgrades Along Domagkstraße
Beyond the new cycle and pedestrian paths, the reconstruction includes several other crucial upgrades:
- Barrier-free Bus Stops: All bus stops along the route will be made barrier-free and equipped with new waiting shelters.
- Lighting and Traffic Signals: The street lighting will be renovated, and traffic light systems will be modernized.
- Traffic Reorganization: Delivery zones will be reordered, taxi stands relocated, and e-charging points for vehicles will be replaced at a nearby location.
Georg Dunkel, Head of the Mobility Department, highlighted the importance of Domagkstraße as part of the Outer Cycle Ring. “Domagkstraße is an important and busy connection for cycling between Parkstadt Schwabing, Domagkpark, and the English Garden. Previously, cyclists sometimes shared the road with 50 km/h traffic or used a narrow sidewalk. I am pleased that the reconstruction will provide separate traffic areas for cyclists and pedestrians, leading to fewer conflicts. Additionally, the adjacent major intersections at Leopoldstraße and Ungererstraße will be made clearer and thus safer,” he remarked.
Phased Construction and Funding Details
The first phase of construction is scheduled to begin on April 7, immediately after Easter, focusing on the section between Ungererstraße and Walter-Gropius-Straße. This will be followed by the section up to Gertrud-Grunow-Straße. In 2027, construction is expected to continue to Weimarer Straße, with the final section extending to Leopoldstraße in 2028. If all goes according to plan, the entire project should be completed by mid-2028.
The total cost for the construction measures is estimated at 16.695 million euros. This significant investment will be financed through the local mobility allowance. Furthermore, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety is contributing 2.68 million euros to the project as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative.
These comprehensive renovations are expected to transform Domagkstraße into a safer and more user-friendly route for all residents and commuters in Munich’s northern district.
