Munich, March 8 – Dominik Krause, a 35-year-old physicist and Green Party candidate, has emerged as a significant figure in the Munich mayoral election, securing a spot in the runoff against long-serving incumbent Dieter Reiter of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The jubilant celebrations among Green Party members in Munich on Saturday evening highlighted Krause’s unexpected success, leaving many across Germany curious about the rising political star.

Krause met his fiancé, Sebastian, during a dance class, and the couple resides in Giesing. Born in Munich in 1990, Krause is one of three siblings. He attributes his commitment to the Green Party to experiences during a Nazi demonstration in Munich, an event that deeply influenced his political awakening. He has been a member of the Munich City Council since 2014.
Defying Critics and Embracing Challenges
Krause confidently addresses critics who suggest he is too young for the office of mayor, often referencing Hans-Jochen Vogel, the SPD politician who was elected to lead Munich City Hall in 1960 at the age of 34. Last year, when Mayor Reiter was sidelined for two months following an operation, Krause seamlessly took over his official duties, managing them without incident or disruption.
Krause is also not afraid to challenge members of his own party. In August 2024, he publicly advocated for Munich to bid for the Olympic Games, a stance that surprised and alienated many within the Green Party. Furthermore, during his election campaign, he actively sought support from his party colleague Robert Habeck. This move carried a certain degree of risk in Bavaria, given that the Christian Social Union (CSU) has for years vocally campaigned against Habeck.
