Munich – An EasyJet flight from London-Gatwick to Innsbruck, Austria, was diverted to Munich on Saturday, July 5, 2026, after experiencing a technical problem. Flight U2 8695, carrying passengers returning from a London holiday, was scheduled to land in Innsbruck at 12:05 PM, but instead touched down in Munich approximately 30 minutes earlier, according to data from the online platform Flightradar24.
Engine and Sensor Failure Reported
EasyJet confirmed to BILD that a technical issue occurred during the flight. While the airline did not specify the exact nature of the problem, the Austrian newspaper “Kronen-Zeitung” reported that passengers were informed onboard that one of the engines and a sensor had failed.
A passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted the “Kronen-Zeitung” and described the incident as a “torture.” He reported that passengers, including many children, were kept on the plane for several hours after landing in Munich. “There are many children on board, and of course, they don’t like that,” the holidaymaker stated.
After the prolonged wait, the pilot eventually informed passengers that the plane could not continue its journey. “We cannot guarantee 100 percent safety,” the captain reportedly told them. Passengers were then allowed to disembark.
Passengers Left Stranded in Munich
Upon disembarking, passengers faced further frustration as EasyJet reportedly made no arrangements for their onward travel to Innsbruck. No buses or trains were provided, leaving passengers to find their own way to their original destination.
An EasyJet spokesperson addressed the incident, stating, “The safety of our customers and our crew is EasyJet’s highest priority.” The airline acknowledged the technical problems but did not confirm whether an engine failure had occurred. Regarding the lack of onward transport, the spokesperson said, “Due to the limited availability of buses in Munich, we informed our customers that we would reimburse them for the costs of their alternative travel arrangements, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
Ongoing Concerns for Air Travel
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about technical issues and passenger welfare in air travel. While airlines prioritize safety, the disruption and inconvenience caused by such events can significantly impact travelers’ plans and experiences. The lack of immediate alternative arrangements for passengers in this instance has drawn criticism from those affected, underscoring the need for robust contingency plans.
The affected passengers are now left to claim reimbursement for their unexpected travel expenses, adding an administrative burden to an already stressful journey. This event serves as a reminder of the potential for unforeseen complications in air travel and the importance of clear communication and support from airlines during such disruptions.
