Berlin, June 9 – Eight individuals were injured early this morning in Berlin-Kreuzberg after a police van and a taxi collided at the intersection of Wilhelmstraße and Hallesches Ufer. The accident, which occurred around 6:00 AM, involved seven police officers and the taxi driver. One police officer was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter.
Details of the Collision
According to the police, the team vehicle of the special unit overturned on its side after the impact, blocking the intersection. The taxi sustained damage to its front. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The fire department reported two serious and six minor injuries, though police initially stated they had no information regarding serious injuries.
Intersection Closed for Hours
The large intersection near the SPD federal headquarters was extensively closed off following the accident. The closure was lifted by midday. The police unit involved, known as the “Brennpunkteinheit” (hotspot unit), is primarily responsible for areas with elevated crime rates, including Görlitzer Park, Kottbusser Tor in Kreuzberg, Hermannstraße in Neukölln, and Alexanderplatz in Mitte. Their main tasks include preventing and prosecuting crimes in these areas and enhancing public safety.
Investigation Underway
It remains unclear whether the officers were en route to an emergency at the time of the collision. An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
