Berlin, March 19 – Paralympic champion Elena Semechin will likely make her comeback after the birth of her son in front of a home crowd in Berlin. The German Swimming Federation (DSV) announced on Wednesday that the 32-year-old had to withdraw from the third stop of the Para Swimming World Series in Barcelona at short notice due to health reasons. Semechin will now have two opportunities in May to compete again in her adopted home city of Berlin.
Sinusitis Forces Withdrawal from Barcelona
Semechin had initially planned to compete in Barcelona on Friday, six months after the birth of her son Klaus. However, a sinus infection prevented her from doing so.
“Unfortunately, my nose is not yet completely clear. A race on Friday would still be too early,” said Semechin.
According to the DSV, Taliso Engel and Maike Naomi Schwarz are also not yet fully fit and will not travel to Spain. Malte Braunschweig, Jason Dilling, and Florian Reiter will represent Germany at the event.
Berlin to Host Dual Comeback Opportunity
The Schwimm- und Sprunghalle im Europasportpark (SSE) in Berlin will host the World Series races from May 7 to 9, followed immediately by the International German Championships (IDM) from May 10 to 12. This provides Semechin with two prime opportunities to return to competitive swimming.
The decision to postpone her comeback highlights the athlete’s commitment to her health and optimal performance. Semechin’s return is eagerly anticipated by fans and the para-swimming community, especially given her status as a Paralympic champion.
Impact on German Para-Swimming Team
The absence of Semechin, Engel, and Schwarz from the Barcelona event means that a significant portion of Germany’s top para-swimmers will not be competing there. However, the presence of Braunschweig, Dilling, and Reiter ensures German representation at the World Series stop.
The focus now shifts to the upcoming events in Berlin, where the German athletes will have the advantage of competing on home soil. These events will be crucial for many swimmers as they prepare for major international competitions later in the year.
Looking Ahead: The Road to Future Competitions
Semechin’s journey back to elite competition is a testament to her dedication and resilience. Her decision to prioritize her health underscores the demanding nature of professional sports, even for accomplished athletes. The upcoming events in Berlin will serve as an important benchmark for her progress and a celebration of her return to the pool.
The German Swimming Federation continues to support its athletes, ensuring they have the best possible conditions for training and competition. The focus remains on athlete well-being and long-term success, with an eye towards future Paralympic Games and World Championships.
