Hamburg, September 15, 2026 – Extensive road construction projects have commenced in the Hamburg-Nord district, specifically in Barmbek-Nord and Barmbek-Süd. These long-term works, which started on Monday, September 14, 2026, are expected to continue until July of next year, aiming to improve traffic safety and urban green spaces.
Krausestraße Sees Initial Phase of Construction
The initial phase of construction is focused on Krausestraße in Barmbek-Nord, between Alter Teichweg and Dehnhaide. This segment will see the creation of a protective and cycling lane on both sides, renewal of road markings, and the reconstruction of the Krausestraße/Dehnhaide traffic island. Additionally, nine new trees will be planted to enhance the urban environment. The intersection of Alter Teichweg/Krausestraße will be closed this upcoming weekend to facilitate these works.
Barmbeker Markt Intersection to Undergo Significant Changes
Starting October 5, construction will shift to the Barmbeker Markt intersection in Barmbek-Süd, as announced by the State Office for Roads, Bridges, and Waters. This phase will involve the establishment of new cycling paths, the installation of barrier-free bus stops, modernization of traffic light systems, and renovation of sidewalks. A substantial greening effort is also planned, with 18 trees to be planted and approximately 1,300 square meters of surface area to be de-sealed.
Minimizing Traffic Disruption
Authorities are committed to minimizing traffic disruption throughout the construction period. Plans include ensuring that at least two lanes remain open in both directions along the main axis of Barmbeker Markt/Hamburger Straße, with the exception of the autumn holidays. The State Office anticipates that all works will be completed by July 2027.
