Fire in Berlin-Steglitz Apartment Building: 76 Firefighters Deployed, Residents Evacuated
Berlin, February 24 – A fire broke out in a six-story apartment building in the Steglitz district of Berlin on Tuesday evening, leading to a significant response from the Berlin Fire Department. Seventy-six firefighters were deployed to the Schildhornstraße address. All residents of the affected building were evacuated, and initial reports indicate no injuries.
Electrical Main Distributor Suspected Cause of Fire
According to a fire department spokesperson, the blaze is believed to have originated in the electrical main distributor located in the ground floor stairwell. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Due to intense smoke development and a blocked entrance, approximately 40 residents were unable to exit the building independently. Some residents sought attention from their balconies and windows, signaling for help.
Large-Scale Emergency Response
The alarm was raised at 9:15 PM, and emergency services arrived at the scene within five to eight minutes. Numerous emergency vehicles were stationed on Schlossstraße. A rescue helicopter was initially requested but ultimately not needed.
The building on Schildhornstraße is currently uninhabitable due to the smoke damage and compromised power supply. The district office arranged emergency accommodation for residents who could not stay with relatives or friends. Around 30 individuals received care at a casualty collection point, facilitated by a Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) emergency bus.
The street was closed to traffic during the operation, and several neighboring houses were temporarily without electricity.
