Hamburg, December 10, 2025 – For the New Year’s Eve transition into 2026, a fireworks ban will once again be in effect around the Binnenalster and the Hamburg Rathausmarkt. The prohibition, which has been a standing regulation since the turn of the year 2019/2020, aims to ensure public safety in these highly frequented areas. The police announced that the ban will be active from 6:00 PM on December 31st until 1:00 AM on New Year’s Day.

Strict Regulations for Public Safety

During the specified hours, it will be prohibited to transport or ignite fireworks within the designated zones. This measure is a continuation of an general decree first issued by the police for safety reasons for the New Year’s Eve celebration leading into 2020. The only exceptions to this ban are small fireworks, such as firecrackers and sparklers, which are still permitted.

Prior to the implementation of this ban, New Year’s Eve celebrations around the Binnenalster were frequently marred by dangerous and threatening situations, primarily due to the improper use of fireworks. According to police reports, visitors and emergency personnel were often deliberately targeted with fireworks, resulting in numerous injuries, including to children. This history of incidents underscores the necessity of the current regulations.

Broader Restrictions on Pyrotechnics in Hamburg

Beyond the specific zones of the Binnenalster and Rathausmarkt, the ignition of fireworks is generally prohibited throughout Hamburg in the immediate vicinity of churches, hospitals, children’s and old people’s homes. Furthermore, it is strictly forbidden near particularly fire-sensitive buildings, such as petrol stations, in accordance with the Explosives Ordinance. This comprehensive approach to fireworks safety extends to nature reserves and landscape protection areas, where the use of pyrotechnics is also prohibited to protect natural environments.

Impact on Celebrations and Public Awareness

The consistent enforcement of these regulations reflects a broader shift towards safer and more controlled New Year’s Eve celebrations in urban areas. While some may view the restrictions as limiting, authorities emphasize the paramount importance of preventing injuries and ensuring a peaceful environment for all residents and visitors. Public awareness campaigns have been ongoing to inform citizens about the specifics of the ban and to encourage compliance.

The police continue to monitor the situation closely and urge everyone to adhere to the rules. The aim is to allow for festive celebrations while mitigating the risks associated with fireworks, especially in crowded urban centers. The effectiveness of these measures will be reviewed following the New Year’s Eve period, as authorities continuously strive to balance tradition with public safety.
