Munich, April 29 – A garbage truck caught fire on Tuesday morning in the northeastern Munich district of Oberföhring, specifically on the on-ramp from Effnerstraße to the M3. The incident, which occurred shortly after 6 AM, prompted a swift response from the Munich Fire Department.
Firefighter Discovers Blaze, Alerts Colleagues
The alarm was raised by a firefighter who was on his way to work. Around 6 AM, he observed the burning truck near the M3 on-ramp in Oberföhring. Due to the proximity of the fire to Fire Station 8 on Apianstraße 1 in Unterföhring, the off-duty firefighter immediately went to the station and alerted his colleagues.
Upon receiving the alert, emergency services could already see a significant plume of smoke from a distance. “When the emergency services arrived, the garbage truck was fully ablaze, with the fire having spread to the driver’s cab,” the fire department reported. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape the vehicle in time and was unharmed.
Rapid Response and Temporary Road Closure
Firefighters quickly brought the situation under control, extinguishing the flames within minutes. However, the on-ramp had to be completely closed to traffic for a temporary period to allow for firefighting operations and subsequent cleanup.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the material damage are currently unknown. The police have launched an investigation into the incident. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses. This incident follows other recent fire-related events in Munich, including a fire in a Schwabing office building and a taxi fire.
