Hamburg, December 10 – The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg, responsible for surveying the seabed in the North and Baltic Seas and locating wrecks and other obstacles, will replace two of its multi-purpose vessels with new constructions. The vessels, named “Wega” and “Deneb,” are crucial for creating up-to-date nautical charts for shipping.
New Vessels to Enhance Marine Survey Capabilities
The decision to replace the existing “Wega” and “Deneb” stems from their age and limited capabilities, which, while essential for their tasks, are no longer sufficient for modern demands. The new vessels are designed to offer enhanced performance and environmental friendliness. They will be constructed in a Spanish shipyard at a total cost of 270 million Euros, marking a significant investment in Germany’s maritime infrastructure.
Advanced Features and Environmental Benefits
Each of the new “Deneb” and “Wega” vessels will measure 70 meters in length and will accommodate an 18-person crew along with up to seven researchers. A key feature of the new ships is their propulsion system, primarily powered by methanol. This choice significantly reduces emissions compared to traditional diesel engines and allows for future operation with climate-neutral methanol, aligning with global efforts to decarbonize shipping.
The new “Wega” is scheduled for completion in 2029 and will be stationed in Hamburg, a major port city in Germany. The “Deneb” will follow a year later, in 2030, and will be homeported in Rostock, another important maritime hub on the Baltic Sea coast.
Federal Transport Minister Calls for More German-Flagged Ships
During the announcement in Hamburg, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing expressed his intention to encourage shipping companies to register more German ships under the German flag.
