Hamburg, May 9 – In a significant move to strengthen their collective voice, the most important German seaports have established a new alliance named ‘Deutsche Häfen – German Ports’. Initiated by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), the alliance seeks to jointly represent the interests of its members in Berlin, primarily focusing on securing federal support for vital infrastructure investments.

New Alliance Unites German Seaports for Stronger Advocacy

The newly formed alliance includes key players such as Bremenports, Brunsbüttel Ports, Seehafen Kiel, the Lower Saxony ports, and Duisburger Hafen AG, alongside the Hamburg Port. Tino Klemm, HPA’s Chief Financial Officer, emphasized the shared challenges faced by these ports. “If you don’t speak with one voice, what you want to address is significantly weaker than if you do it together. We all face the challenges of financially covering infrastructure investments,” Klemm stated.

The ‘German Ports’ alliance is demanding both short-term federal participation in specific projects and a sustained, regular increase in funding to alleviate the financial burden on the states. This unified approach is expected to give the ports greater leverage in their negotiations with the federal government.

Massive Investments Needed for Climate-Friendly Transition and Defense Readiness

The financial requirements for German ports over the coming years are substantial. These investments are crucial for two main reasons: adapting ports for climate-friendly energy imports and enhancing their capabilities for defense tasks. Additionally, there is an urgent need to renovate dilapidated quay walls, roads, and bridges.

“Some infrastructure has aged. So we are talking about a magnitude of 15 billion euros here,” explained Tino Klemm. For the Hamburg port alone, Mayor Peter Tschentscher recently estimated the required investments at over 8 billion euros, highlighting the sheer scale of the financial challenge.

Ammonia Import Terminal Approved in Hamburg Port

In related news, a large ammonia import terminal has received environmental approval to be built on the site of the Blumensand tank farm in the Hamburg port. This development underscores the port’s strategic role in future energy imports and its commitment to climate-friendly initiatives.

Kuhmühle Wastewater Sluice Undergoing Renovation

Another major project in Hamburg’s infrastructure development is the renovation of the Kuhmühle wastewater sluice. This sluice is one of the city’s largest and oldest wastewater systems, and its refurbishment is part of broader efforts to modernize Hamburg’s canalization network.

The formation of the ‘German Ports’ alliance marks a pivotal moment for German seaports, signaling a concerted effort to address their shared challenges and secure the necessary investments for their future development and strategic importance.
