Hamburg, 26 June – Globus has announced the closure of its Markthalle in Lurup, located on Grandkuhlenweg, effective September 30, 2026. The decision, first reported by the trade magazine “Lebensmittel Praxis,” comes less than three years after its grand opening on July 20, 2023. The company attributes the closure to a lack of sustainable economic prospects under the current local conditions.
Globus Markthalle in Lurup to Cease Operations
The XXL supermarket, which previously housed a “Real” supermarket, underwent extensive renovations before its opening in 2023. It featured its own butchery, bakery, and various other shops. However, the company has concluded that the concept could not be successfully implemented long-term within the existing framework.
Matthias Bruch, Managing Partner of Globus, stated, “We evaluate each of our locations individually. The benchmark for this is high customer acceptance and the ability to operate the market successfully on a sustainable and long-term economic basis.” He added that intensive efforts were made in recent months to avert the closure, but without success.
Impact on Employees and Future Plans
Globus has already informed its employees and business partners about the impending closure. Initial discussions regarding a social plan have commenced with the works council, with the aim of finding socially acceptable solutions for the affected staff.
While the Hamburg location is being abandoned, the Globus group is pursuing expansion in other areas. The company plans to open another hardware store in Bielefeld in autumn 2026 and a second hypermarket in Brno, Czech Republic. Preparations for a new Markthalle in Trier are also underway.
According to its own information, the Globus group operates 77 hypermarkets and 90 hardware stores, employing over 34,000 people, with approximately 28,000 in Germany.
