Green Light for Diebsteich Quarter: New Stadium and Music Hall in Hamburg

Hamburg, June 24 – The city of Hamburg is set to gain a significant new event venue as the Senate Commission for Urban Development has given the green light for the construction of a music hall and a football stadium, each designed to accommodate 5,000 visitors, at the Diebsteich in Altona.

This decision paves the way for the transformation of the industrial site, which Hamburg acquired from Thyssenkrupp nine years ago. The redevelopment is expected to commence soon, following a public display of plans in July, during which local residents will have the opportunity to provide their feedback. The Oberliga team Altona 93 is projected to play in the new stadium within three years.

Long-Awaited Development for Altona

Mithat Capar, SPD Member of the Bürgerschaft for Altona, emphasized the urgency of the project. “It is now important that the timetable holds and that the project is not put on the back burner again,” he stated, highlighting the long anticipation for this development.

Despite the city’s current budget constraints, the necessary funds for this long-planned area are available. The new stadium, suitable for the Regionalliga, has been designed by the renowned Hamburg architectural firm gmp. Uniquely, offices for three tax authorities will be located on the exterior, beneath the stadium’s stands.

Music Hall and New Altona

The music hall is expected to be completed one year after the stadium. “With the stadium, the music hall, and the development around the new train station, a piece of ‘New Altona’ is emerging here,” commented Capar. NDR Hamburg has learned that the city is already in negotiations with potential tenants for the music hall, which, like the stadium, will remain city-owned.

Hamburg’s Chief Building Director, Franz Josef Höing, had previously stated four years ago that the Diebsteich Quarter should not become a high-gloss district, but rather retain a “rough charm.”

Altona 93’s Relocation to Pave Way for Housing

The planned relocation of Altona 93 to Diebsteich in 2029 will free up the Adolf-Jäger-Kampfbahn for housing development. The site of the current stadium is slated for the construction of approximately 300 apartments after 2030.

Hamburg’s Broader Arena Development

In related news, Hamburg is also preparing for a new multi-functional arena in Rothenburgsort. The tender for this project has already been launched, with basketball games expected to be played at the Billebogen from the 2030s onwards.

This development at Diebsteich is part of a broader strategy to enhance Hamburg’s urban landscape and provide new cultural and sporting venues for its residents and visitors.
