Hamburg Breaks Ground on New Greenhouse in Klein Flottbek

Hamburg, September 25 – A new chapter for Hamburg’s botanical treasures began on Friday with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for a new greenhouse in Klein Flottbek. Science Senator Maryam Blumenthal (Greens) and University President Hauke Heekeren initiated the construction of the facility, which will serve as a temporary home for the diverse plant collection from Planten un Blomen.

Interim Home for Planten un Blomen’s Exotic Flora

The greenhouses in Planten un Blomen have been closed for several years, awaiting extensive renovation. During this period, thousands of tropical and subtropical plants will be relocated to the new interim greenhouse in the Botanical Garden in Klein Flottbek. This crucial project ensures the preservation of these valuable botanical specimens during the renovation phase.

The construction of the new interim greenhouse is estimated to cost 15 million Euros and is projected to be completed in approximately two years. This significant investment underscores Hamburg’s commitment to its natural heritage and public green spaces.

Long-Term Plans for Both Greenhouses

Officials anticipate that the renovation of the Planten un Blomen greenhouses will take four to five years to complete. Following the renovation, a significant portion of the plants will return to their original home. However, the new facility in Klein Flottbek is not merely a temporary solution; it is designed to remain as a permanent public greenhouse, enriching Hamburg’s botanical offerings for years to come.

Federal Funding Supports Renovation Efforts

The extensive renovation of the Planten un Blomen greenhouses, along with the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof, has received substantial financial support from the federal government. State Minister for Culture Weimer presented the funding approvals, allocating a total of 22 million Euros for these two significant projects. This federal contribution highlights the national importance of these cultural and natural landmarks.

Planten un Blomen: A Beloved Green Oasis

Planten un Blomen, Hamburg’s central park, is renowned for its artfully designed gardens, inviting seating areas, and a diverse program of concerts and events. It continues to be a major attraction for both residents and tourists, offering a green sanctuary in the heart of the city. The ongoing renovations aim to enhance this beloved park, ensuring its continued beauty and functionality for future generations.

Further News from Hamburg

In other news, Hamburg is currently undergoing a military exercise dubbed “Red Storm Charlie,” which has also seen protests and a railway blockade by activists. Additionally, the A7 motorway and Elbe Tunnel faced a full weekend closure. Meanwhile, three individuals have been sentenced to prison for a brutal attack on a goldsmith in Hamburg-Langenhorn.
