Hamburg, May 29 – The city of Hamburg has announced the acquisition of the former Karstadt department store building and an adjacent plot at Sachsentor in Bergedorf. The purchase aims to breathe new life into Bergedorf’s city center, with plans for new housing and retail establishments.
Vacant Since 2021: A New Chapter for Bergedorf’s Landmark
The former Karstadt building has stood empty since 2021, when the company abruptly closed its main department store and the Sport-Karstadt branch. One of the buildings was subsequently demolished, leaving a construction pit that has been a source of frustration for many Bergedorf residents. The remaining vacant building was temporarily used by the police for training purposes. This situation is now set to change.
4,200 Square Meters Under City Ownership
The city of Hamburg has acquired the Karstadt property, including the vacant building, and the neighboring plot. In total, approximately 4,200 square meters of land will now be under city ownership. Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD) noted that the purchase was preceded by intensive negotiations.
Revitalization Plans: Housing and Commercial Spaces
According to the Senate, the primary goal of the acquisition is to invigorate Bergedorf’s city center. The plans include creating new housing opportunities and enhancing the overall quality of public spaces. These developments are expected to unfold “step by step” over the coming years.
District Administrator Cornelia Schmidt-Hoffmann expressed relief at the conclusion of the deal. She stated that the city can now “actively steer development and specifically search for partners.” While acknowledging that much work remains, she emphasized that a significant intermediate step has been achieved.
Broader Urban Development in Hamburg
This acquisition is part of a larger trend of urban redevelopment in Hamburg. For instance, the Thalia-Haus is slated for demolition to make way for a 5-star hotel with Alster views, offices, and apartments, with completion anticipated by 2028.
Community Impact and Future Outlook
The redevelopment of the Karstadt site is expected to address long-standing concerns about urban blight and contribute positively to the local economy. The introduction of new residential and commercial spaces aims to increase foot traffic, support local businesses, and create a more vibrant community hub.
The specific timeline for the commencement of construction and the detailed plans for the types of housing and retail units will be announced as the city progresses in its search for development partners. The project is anticipated to be a multi-year endeavor, transforming a previously dormant area into a dynamic part of Bergedorf.
