Hamburg Cleans Up: Over 90,000 Volunteers Join City-Wide Cleanup Campaign
Hamburg, February 19 – The city of Hamburg is once again mobilizing its citizens for the annual cleanup campaign, ‘Hamburg räumt auf.’ More than 90,000 registrations have already been received by the city cleaning department for the initiative, which aims to collect litter from public spaces. This year marks the 29th iteration of the popular event.
Widespread Participation Across the City
Approximately 70 percent of the nearly 1,500 participating groups this year are schools, highlighting the strong engagement of educational institutions in civic responsibility. The campaign also enjoys significant popularity among sports and neighborhood associations, demonstrating a broad community effort to maintain the cleanliness of Hamburg.
Registration for ‘Hamburg räumt auf’ remains open until Friday, February 20th, at midnight, offering a final opportunity for individuals and groups to join the initiative. The city cleaning department provides essential supplies, including garbage bags and gloves, at seven designated collection points across Hamburg to facilitate the cleanup efforts.
Diversified Cleanup Efforts, Including Underwater Operations
In a notable aspect of this year’s campaign, divers from the fire brigade, police, and DLRG (German Life Saving Association) are actively participating. Their focus will be on retrieving waste from the Isebek Canal, specifically near the Hoheluftbrücke, addressing pollution in the city’s waterways. This specialized effort underscores the comprehensive nature of the cleanup, targeting both land and water environments.
The ‘Hamburg räumt auf’ campaign is scheduled to run until March 1st, allowing for several days of concentrated cleanup activities across the city. Last year, the initiative successfully collected an impressive 135 tons of waste, a figure that organizers hope to match or exceed this year with the increased volunteer participation.
The success of ‘Hamburg räumt auf’ reflects a strong community spirit and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship in Hamburg. The widespread involvement of schools, clubs, and individual volunteers is crucial in making the city a cleaner and more pleasant place for all its residents and visitors.
