Hamburg Coalition Pushes for Prompt Review of AfD Ban
Hamburg, September 17 – The Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Green Party, and The Left in Hamburg are pushing for a rapid examination of the legal prerequisites for a ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. These factions intend to advocate for the swift establishment of a federal-state working group dedicated to this review.
An inter-factional motion to this effect is expected to be approved by the Bürgerschaft (Hamburg Parliament) at the end of this month. The alliance of the SPD, Greens, and The Left holds a clear majority in the Bürgerschaft, making the approval of the motion highly probable.
Factions of SPD, Greens, and The Left Demand Review
Earlier this month, Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) had expressed skepticism regarding a potential ban procedure. However, SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Kienscherf stated that while politicians do not decide whether a party is banned, they must ensure that the question can be examined at all.
Deniz Celik of The Left believes that the conditions for the unconstitutionality of the AfD already exist, and therefore, the question of an AfD ban can no longer be postponed. Sina Imhof of the Green Party also considers the review to be urgently necessary, emphasizing that one cannot stand idly by when freedom and human dignity are attacked.
CDU: ‘Wrong Signal’
In contrast, CDU parliamentary group leader Dennis Thering described the initiative as a ‘wrong signal.’ He argued that a party ban should neither be politically influenced nor instrumentalized for party politics.
AfD leader Dirk Nockmann views it as an ‘attack on democracy and the will of the voters.’ He believes that the AfD has established itself as a people’s party, and this should be respected.
Grote Supports Review of AfD Ban Procedure
Hamburg’s Interior Senator Grote considers a federal-state working group to be ‘the next logical step.’ Grote currently chairs the Interior Ministers’ Conference.
Following the AfD’s success in elections, Grote has warned of dangers to security authorities. According to Hamburg’s Interior Senator Grote, the Interior Ministers’ Conference is set to discuss how to deal with a potentially far-right state government.

Bürgerschaft President Veit has spoken out in favor of reviewing an AfD ban procedure, while Hamburg’s Mayor Tschentscher remains reserved.
After the election in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD became the strongest party, reactions from Hamburg varied. While the Hamburg AfD congratulated on a ‘resounding election victory,’ other parties spoke of a ‘bitter day.’
