Hamburg, May 20 – The extensive construction work on the vital railway line connecting Hamburg and Hannover is proceeding precisely as planned, Deutsche Bahn confirmed on Tuesday. This significant infrastructure project, which commenced on May 1, involves comprehensive upgrades including the renewal of tracks, switches, overhead lines, and several bridges. The railway operator has assured that the line will be fully operational again by July 11.
Major Upgrades Underway: Focus on Lüneburg and Eschede
A key component of the current construction phase is the complete reconstruction of a railway bridge at Lüneburg station. Project manager Stephan Fabig explained that the old bridge, dating back to the 1870s, had reached the end of its operational life. “The challenge is to dismantle the old bridge structures and build the new bridge within ten weeks,” Fabig stated. To ensure timely completion, crews are working around the clock in a three-shift system.
Beyond Lüneburg, other critical areas are also undergoing significant improvements. In Eschede (Celle district), for instance, a railway embankment is being secured and renovated. Overall, the project aims to renew approximately 66 kilometers of tracks, 36 switches, and two kilometers of overhead lines between May 1 and July 10. These efforts are part of Deutsche Bahn’s “quality offensive” designed to minimize technical malfunctions on this heavily trafficked route in the future.
Progress Monitored Daily, No Significant Delays
Despite the complexity of the undertaking, project manager Stephan Fabig expressed satisfaction with the progress. “Of course, one or two things don’t always go as we imagine – for example, if a truck isn’t on time. But these are minor issues. On the whole, I have to say: So far, everything is going as planned,” Fabig commented. Daily assessments are conducted to track the work’s advancement, utilizing a ‘traffic light’ system to indicate progress. “So far, we have always had green. That is very gratifying,” he added.
While the new railway bridge in Lüneburg is still in its early stages of construction, Fabig remains optimistic about its timely completion. “Then we will have a structure that is designed for the next one hundred years,” he affirmed, highlighting the long-term benefits of the current investment.
Limited Service During Construction, Full Resumption Expected
During the construction period, railway traffic on the Hamburg-Hannover line is significantly restricted, with parts of the route completely closed. Long-distance services are being diverted until July 10. However, a spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn reiterated the commitment to the schedule, promising that “on July 11, the trains will run again – as planned.”
The temporary disruptions have led to alternative travel arrangements, including rail replacement services. Reports from commuters in the initial week of the closure indicated mixed experiences, with some criticisms regarding the replacement services. Nevertheless, the overarching goal remains a more reliable and efficient rail network for the future.
