Hamburg-Hannover Rail Closure Delayed, Berlin Link Extended Due to Winter Weather
Hamburg/Hannover, April 11, 2026 – The Deutsche Bahn’s extensive maintenance work on the rail line between Hamburg and Hannover, initially scheduled to begin in May, has been pushed back. This decision stems from unforeseen delays in the general renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin route, which was significantly impacted by the most severe winter weather in over 15 years. The company aims to avoid the simultaneous closure of two crucial main lines.
Revised Schedule for Hamburg-Hannover Maintenance
The “Quality Offensive” on the Hamburg-Hannover route, which involves renovating approximately 100 kilometers of track and 70 switches, will still commence on May 1st but with a staggered approach. According to the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft (LNVG), the original replacement concept will now only be implemented from June 14th. During this period, no trains will operate between Uelzen and Hannover. Between Lüneburg and Hamburg, regional trains will run on a limited schedule, connecting to bus replacement services. Long-distance services between Hamburg and Hannover will be diverted. This adjustment is crucial to allow continued diversion of long-distance and freight traffic between Hamburg and Berlin via Lüneburg and Uelzen.
Impacted Sections and Diversions
The entire Hamburg-Hannover section will experience restrictions. However, trains will continue to operate between Lüneburg and Hamburg throughout the construction period, albeit with altered departure times. Individual regional trains will also run between Uelzen and Hamburg from May 1st to June 13th. In contrast, no trains will operate between Lüneburg and Hannover for the entire duration of the works, according to Metronom.
Due to numerous diversions, the Hamburg-Bremen route will also see timetable changes. The S-Bahn between Celle and Hannover Hauptbahnhof remains unaffected. The erixx-operated line between Lüneburg and Dannenberg-Ost will be fully closed from May 1st to June 13th, with bus replacement services planned for all fully closed routes.
Bus Replacement Services and Travel Time Extensions
Bus replacement services will be organized for sections between Lüneburg, Uelzen, Celle, and Langenhagen-Mitte. The schedule is already available online. These services will significantly extend travel times:
- Lüneburg to Hannover: Approximately 2 hours 42 minutes (previously 1 hour 40 minutes, +1 hour 2 minutes)
- Celle to Lüneburg: Approximately 1 hour 48 minutes (previously 1 hour 15 minutes, +33 minutes)
- Celle to Hamburg: Approximately 2 hours 47 minutes (previously 1 hour 57 minutes, +50 minutes)
Between Langenhagen-Mitte and Hannover, travelers are advised to use local public transport. Due to limited capacity, bicycles cannot be transported on replacement buses. The Wendlandbahn between Lüneburg and Dannenberg-Ost will also be replaced by buses, with an express bus stopping only in Hitzacker and a bus serving all intermediate stops. Travel times will increase by 3 minutes for the express bus and 42 minutes for the bus with all stops.
Long-Distance Services Affected
ICE stops in Lüneburg, Uelzen, and Celle will be canceled, and long-distance trains will be diverted. Deutsche Bahn has updated its travel information accordingly. On the Kassel-Hannover-Hamburg axis, a long-distance connection is expected every half hour, with an estimated travel time extension of 45 minutes. ICE-Sprinter services from Hamburg to Frankfurt will now start from Hannover. The Cologne-Bremen-Hamburg route will offer an hourly direct connection, with an approximate 20-minute travel time extension. Trains between NRW-Bremen-Hamburg-Binz will only operate between Hamburg and Binz.
The construction work also impacts the Bremen-Hannover route, where no direct long-distance connections will be available during the Hamburg-Hannover closure. Stops in Verden and Nienburg will be canceled. The Hamburg-Berlin connection will also see a slight reduction, with only three instead of four long-distance trains every two hours.
Reasons for Changes on Other Routes
The numerous diversions necessitate a reorganization of train services on other routes. Between Bremen and Hannover, Deutsche Bahn plans to operate without long-distance trains, effectively eliminating the direct connection from Bremen via Hannover to Berlin. More trains will operate between Hamburg and Bremen during this period, affecting regional services. The RB41 line will only run between Scheeßel and Hamburg from Monday to Friday. The RE4 is expected to take nine minutes longer, as it will stop at all stations between Rotenburg (Wümme) and Bremen. Booster trains between Tostedt and Hamburg will be canceled, with the exception of one afternoon train.
Planned Construction Measures
New signal boxes will be built in Uelzen, Bad Bevensen, Bienenbüttel, and Deutsch Evern, incorporating new control and safety technology. Train stations in Stelle, Suderburg, Großburgwedel, and Langenhagen-Mitte will also be renovated. During construction, approximately 100 kilometers of track, 70 switches, and 15 structural engineering works will be renewed between Maschen and Hannover-Burg. Deutsche Bahn refers to this as a
