Hamburg-Harburg’s Lüneburger Straße to Undergo Major Redevelopment
Hamburg, July 13th – The Lüneburger Straße in Hamburg-Harburg is set to undergo a major redevelopment, with construction expected to commence in approximately one year. This was announced by Christian Carstensen (SPD), head of the Harburg district office, in an interview with NDR Hamburg. The project aims to revitalize the street, which is a central artery for around 13,000 people daily.
A New Look for Harburg’s Heart
The vision for the renewed Lüneburger Straße was finalized earlier this year, following a competition among several architectural firms. The Hamburg-based firm Bruun & Möllers emerged as the winner. Carstensen outlined the planned improvements: “We will redesign the old paving. We will create additional seating and significantly more trees, ensuring a pleasant environment even in summer.” A water feature is also planned for the Lüneburger Tor meeting point. The city is investing a total of 6.5 million Euros in the project.
District Has No Influence on Business Mix
Despite the positive outlook for the street’s physical transformation, many citizens have expressed concerns about the current mix of businesses. Carstensen clarified that the district has limited influence over this aspect. “We are not the approving authority for retail businesses. Supply and demand must regulate that,” he stated. However, he emphasized that the desire for a more attractive pedestrian zone is being taken seriously.
Businesses to Remain Accessible During Construction
During the construction phase, businesses along the Lüneburger Straße are assured that they will remain accessible to customers. The comprehensive redevelopment is expected to be completed, and the Lüneburger Straße is anticipated to reveal its new look by 2029.
Context: Other Harburg Infrastructure Projects
This redevelopment comes as part of broader infrastructure improvements in Hamburg-Harburg. On March 9th, 2026, work began on the refurbishment of the Gloriatunnel in the center of Hamburg-Harburg. This construction, dating back to the 1970s, is scheduled for a year-long renovation, indicating a concerted effort to modernize the district’s infrastructure.
The Lüneburger Straße project reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing urban spaces and improving the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
