Hamburg Implements Stricter Fines for Illegal Waste Disposal
Hamburg, July 29 – The city of Hamburg has announced a substantial increase in fines for illegal waste disposal, targeting everything from carelessly discarded chewing gum to illegally dumped refrigerators. This measure, a joint effort by the district authorities and the environmental agency, aims to curb the growing problem of pollution and protect the city’s public spaces and natural environments.
Significant Hikes in Penalties
Previously, spitting chewing gum on the sidewalk incurred a 35 Euro fine; now, offenders could face penalties of up to 150 Euros. An unthinkingly discarded cigarette butt, which once might have gone unnoticed, can now cost the perpetrator up to 300 Euros. The city is also taking a tougher stance on the illegal disposal of bulky waste and household items, with fines for these offenses partially doubling.
Katharina Fegebank (Greens), Senator for the Environment, emphasized the rationale behind these stricter measures: “Those who simply leave behind cigarette butts, cups, or bulky waste harm the general public. Cleanliness and nature conservation go hand in hand, and our green spaces and waterways must be better protected.”
Combating Illegal Dumping and Wildlife Feeding
Last year alone, the city cleaning department had to collect nearly 6,000 tons of illegally disposed waste. The city also plans to intensify efforts against the prohibited feeding of wild animals. For instance, feeding geese in the Alster will now result in a minimum fine of 200 Euros. In severe cases, authorities can impose fines reaching into the four-digit range.
The issue of illegal waste disposal has been escalating in Hamburg. Since 2020, the total amount of illegally dumped waste has increased by more than 50 percent. The clean-up operations cost the city approximately 25 million Euros last year, highlighting the significant financial burden caused by these illicit activities.
