Hamburg Police to Receive Advanced Drone Defense System
Hamburg, September 15 – The city of Hamburg is investing a further 4.2 million euros in drone defense. The police force will acquire a system comprising three modern interceptor drones, a decision approved by the Senate on Tuesday. This move comes in response to a significant increase in drone threats observed in recent years, according to the Interior Ministry.
The ministry cited an attempted attack at Leipzig Airport in early August, where an explosive-laden drone could have been neutralized by the new technology. The new system is designed to provide a robust response to such incidents.
AI-Powered Interceptor Drones to Track and Capture
The new drone defense system, developed by “Argus Interception,” is equipped with artificial intelligence (AI). It continuously scans the airspace for potential threats. Upon detecting a suspicious drone, an interceptor drone can be dispatched. This AI-powered drone can pursue the foreign drone, gather information about it and its pilot, and, if necessary, deploy a net to capture it mid-air.
Police President Falk Schnabel emphasized that this system will allow the police to react “flexibly and in a situation-adapted manner,” particularly around critical infrastructure and during major events. This enhanced capability aims to bolster security across the city.
Expanding Drone Defense in Hamburg Port
In addition to the new system, the Hamburg police are collaborating with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the defense company Rheinmetall to further develop drone defense measures for the Hamburg Port. This joint effort underscores the city’s commitment to protecting its vital infrastructure.
The funding for this drone defense initiative originates from the federal government’s special infrastructure fund. The Senate had previously announced its intention to allocate a total of approximately 60 million euros from this fund for measures aimed at strengthening crisis management across various sectors.
The acquisition of this advanced drone defense system marks a significant step for Hamburg in addressing evolving security challenges posed by unauthorized drone activities. The integration of AI technology and the ability to physically intercept threatening drones represent a substantial upgrade to the city’s protective capabilities.
