Hamburg’s Left Party Criticizes Soaring Rents for Social Housing
Hamburg, August 22 – The Left Party has sharply criticized the Hamburg Senate’s plan to increase initial rents for social housing, a move that comes as the city aims to save 400 million euros in its budget over the coming years. The criticism was voiced on Friday during a city development committee meeting.
Heike Sudmann, co-chair of the Left Party parliamentary group and spokesperson for housing, rents, and transport, highlighted that new social housing units are being built with initial rents of 10 or 13 euros per square meter. This is a significant increase from the 7.85 euros per square meter originally stipulated in the Senate’s program for social housing.
