Hamburg Commemorates Fourth Anniversary of Ukraine War with Solidarity Events
Hamburg, February 24 – The city of Hamburg is marking the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine with a series of events demonstrating ongoing solidarity. These include official commemorations by the Bürgerschaft and Senate, a significant donation of power generators by the Chamber of Commerce, and public demonstrations.
Official Commemoration and Parliamentary Session
A key political event is scheduled for early afternoon in the Rathaus-Diele, where the Bürgerschaft and Senate will join Iryna Tybinka, the Consul General of Ukraine, to remember the deceased, injured, and displaced victims of the war. Tomorrow, the fourth anniversary of the war will be a central topic on the agenda of the Hamburg Parliament.
Hamburg Chamber of Commerce Donates Power Generators
The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is also sending a strong signal of solidarity. As reported by NDR 90,3, several member companies are donating urgently needed power generators to Ukraine. These generators are crucial for maintaining the energy supply in areas affected by attacks. A statement released today by the Chamber of Commerce emphasizes, “We are keeping our connection to our partners in Kyiv alive and providing practical support where it is needed.”
Public Demonstrations and Rallies
Citizens have the opportunity to publicly express their solidarity with Ukraine. A demonstration is planned for 5:00 PM at Heidi-Kabel-Platz near the main train station, followed an hour later by a rally at Gänsemarkt.
Ongoing Support and Concerns
The continued support for Ukraine remains a topic of discussion. A recent #NDRfragt survey revealed differing opinions on whether Ukraine is receiving sufficient assistance, with responses varying significantly across regions. Many Ukrainians who have found refuge in Northern Germany continue to live in constant worry for their relatives back home, four years into the conflict.
Context: Recent News in Hamburg
This show of solidarity comes amidst other significant local news in Hamburg. The 2025 accident statistics show a nearly halved number of traffic fatalities, with 21 deaths compared to 39 in the previous year. The closure of the A7 Elbtunnel was recently lifted, though a warning strike could still cause traffic congestion. Additionally, numerous bridges in the Hamburg port are scheduled for closures in 2026 for maintenance, including six weekend closures for the Köhlbrandbrücke. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) also recently handed over a grant of 25 million Euros to the “Stiftung Lebensraum Elbe” for the city’s rivers and waterways.
