Hamburg Mayor Criticizes Federal Government’s Fiscal Policy Amid Healthcare Reform
Hamburg, July 11 – Hamburg’s First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher (SPD), has launched a sharp attack on the federal government’s fiscal policy, specifically targeting the actions of his party colleague, Lars Klingbeil, within the Federal Ministry of Finance. Tschentscher’s criticism centers on the recently passed reform of the statutory health insurance system.
In a surprisingly clear departure from the federal government’s policies, in which his own SPD party is involved, Tschentscher labeled the tax and financial policies of the black-red coalition as “misguided.” He asserted that the federal government is distributing “tax gifts with a watering can,” thereby rendering itself unable to act in other crucial areas.
Lack of Financial Maneuverability
According to Tschentscher, the prime example of this financial inflexibility is the statutory health insurance reform approved on Friday. He argues that because “high billions in subsidies” are being distributed elsewhere, there is a lack of financial room to maneuver. Consequently, insurance-unrelated benefits, such as family co-insurance, cannot be funded from tax revenues.
Mediation Committee Proposal Rejected
Instead, these costs are being solely imposed on contributors, Tschentscher criticized. He expressed regret that Hamburg’s motion to convene a mediation committee did not gain a majority.
Savings Package Aims to Relieve Statutory Health Insurance
The savings package, approved on Friday, is intended to relieve statutory health insurance funds from sharply rising expenditures in 2027, thereby preventing new contribution increases. The plan includes spending curbs for medical practices, clinics, pharmacies, and the pharmaceutical industry, as well as higher co-payments for medications and restrictions on the free co-insurance of spouses. According to Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU), a growing gap of 18.8 billion euros is being closed.
