Hamburg, December 12 – The districts of Hamburg-Mitte and Altona are planning to jointly establish a Night Commissioner position, following the successful model implemented in St. Pauli. This initiative aims to foster better coexistence between residents and the vibrant nightlife scene in various entertainment hotspots.

Successful Model in St. Pauli to Be Expanded

In St. Pauli, the Night Commissioner, along with their team, has effectively served as a point of contact, mediator, and problem-solver, addressing concerns of residents while balancing the interests of pub and club owners. This approach has proven beneficial in managing the dynamic environment of the Kiez, working in close collaboration with the district authorities.

Anna Vogel, from the SPD parliamentary group in Altona, highlighted the success of the Night Commissioner’s work in St. Pauli, stating that the role has already “accompanied topics in our dance area.” The expansion of this concept to other areas signifies a strategic move to “think together” about the city’s nightlife hotspots.

New Role to Cover Schanze, Ottensen, and Karoviertel

Starting next year, the Night Commissioner’s responsibilities will extend to include the popular areas of Schanze, Ottensen, and the Karoviertel. This expansion is expected to bring the same level of mediation and community engagement to these bustling neighborhoods, which are known for their diverse gastronomic and cultural offerings.

The decision to expand the role was met with approval in Altona, where the Greens and CDU also voted in favor of the proposal on Thursday. The new concept is scheduled for discussion in the Hamburg-Mitte district in January, after which the position will be advertised.

Sascha Bartz Hopes for Permanent Establishment

Sascha Bartz, the current Night Commissioner for St. Pauli, and his team have expressed their intention to reapply for the newly expanded role. Bartz voiced his hope that the position, after an initial six-month pilot phase, will be permanently established, underscoring the long-term commitment to this community-focused approach to nightlife management.

The establishment of a Night Commissioner was initially decided by the district assembly on Thursday in Hamburg, specifically for St. Pauli. The role was conceived as a central point of contact for residents, as well as for the gastronomy and club scene, aiming to address issues and facilitate dialogue proactively.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

The joint appointment of a Night Commissioner by Hamburg-Mitte and Altona underscores a collaborative effort between the districts to tackle the complexities of urban nightlife. By providing a dedicated point of contact, the initiative seeks to enhance communication, resolve conflicts, and promote a harmonious environment for both residents and businesses.

This move reflects a growing trend in urban planning to integrate nightlife management into broader community development strategies, recognizing the economic and cultural value of a vibrant night economy while mitigating its potential negative impacts on residents.

The upcoming discussions in Hamburg-Mitte in January will finalize the details of the new concept, paving the way for the joint advertisement of the position. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in shaping the future of nightlife in these key Hamburg districts, building on the positive experiences from St. Pauli.
