Hamburg Police Opts for Drones Over Helicopters to Cut Costs
Hamburg, August 21 – The Hamburg Police are implementing significant changes to their operational strategy, announcing the replacement of their two 20-year-old helicopters, “Libelle 1” and “Libelle 2,” with advanced drone technology. This move is projected to save over three million euros annually, a decision driven by ongoing budget constraints within the city.
According to Sebastian Born, spokesperson for NDR Hamburg Police, the transition to drones will provide a more efficient, cost-effective, and quieter alternative for various police operations. “For the future, the plan is that we will be able to launch drones widely across Hamburg to scout out the operational situation,” Born stated, emphasizing that drones can almost entirely replace helicopters. “A drone is much better available, faster, cheaper, and quieter.”
Drones: A Versatile Tool for Modern Policing
The new drone fleet is expected to deliver quick and precise data for a range of scenarios, including monitoring riots in stadiums, overseeing demonstrations, and assisting in searches for missing persons. These unmanned aerial vehicles will be strategically stationed on the rooftops of police stations across the city, ensuring rapid deployment capabilities.
Wider Budget Cuts and Police Discontent
The decision to replace helicopters with drones is part of a larger series of cost-cutting measures. The Hamburg Police had previously announced the disbandment of its mounted police unit by the end of 2027, with the ten officers and their horses to be reassigned to other departments.
These budget cuts have, however, stirred considerable unrest within the police force. Officers are particularly concerned about a proposed increase in working hours to 41 hours per week. In response, the German Police Union has called for a protest rally this afternoon at the Rathaus (City Hall) to voice their grievances against these changes.
Context of the Changes
The Hamburg Police’s strategic shift reflects a growing trend in law enforcement agencies worldwide to leverage technology for improved operational efficiency and cost reduction. While drones offer significant advantages in terms of deployment speed, lower operating costs, and reduced noise pollution, the simultaneous implementation of other austerity measures has created tension among the ranks.
The city of Hamburg is facing financial pressures that necessitate such reevaluations of public services. The long-term impact of these changes on police morale and public safety will be closely monitored as the new strategies are rolled out.
The Hamburg Journal on NDR Fernsehen reported on this topic yesterday evening, August 20, at 7:30 PM, providing initial insights into the police’s plans.
