Hamburg Says ‘No’ to Olympic Bid, Boosting Munich’s Chances
Munich, Bavaria, June 1, 2026 – The city of Hamburg has definitively rejected a bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. In a public referendum held yesterday, Sunday, the majority of citizens voted against the ambitious plans to bring the global sporting event to the Alster and Elbe rivers. This outcome significantly reduces the domestic competition for Munich, which is also vying to host the Games.
The voting results were clear even before the final count was complete, demonstrating strong public opposition. Voter turnout for the referendum stood at 49.5 percent, with approximately 1.3 million eligible voters aged 16 and older.
A Repeat of History: Hamburg’s Second Rejection
This rejection marks a repeat of history for Hamburg. Eleven years prior, in 2015, the city’s bid for the 2024 Olympic Games was also thwarted by a public vote. At that time, 51.6 percent of citizens voted against the proposal, with only 48.4 percent in favor. The turnout in 2015 was slightly higher at 50.2 percent.
The current red-green Senate, led by First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD), faced a similar setback to its predecessors, highlighting a consistent public sentiment against hosting the Games in Hamburg.
Munich’s Mayor Expresses Regret, Acknowledges Democratic Decision
With Hamburg out of the running, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) now has three potential candidates remaining: Berlin, the Rhine-Ruhr region, and Munich. In October 2025, approximately 66 percent of Munich residents voted in favor of an Olympic bid, demonstrating strong local support.
Munich’s new Mayor, Dominik Krause (Greens), has publicly stated that hosting the Games would be a “gigantic opportunity” for the city. Following the announcement of Hamburg’s decision, Mayor Krause shared his reaction on Instagram:
“I regret today’s result in Hamburg, but I explicitly respect this democratic decision.”
This statement reflects a commitment to fair play and democratic principles within the German Olympic bidding process.
The Road Ahead for the DOSB
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is scheduled to make its crucial decision on September 26, selecting which candidate will proceed to the international bidding process. This decision will determine Germany’s representative in the global competition for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympic Games.
Public Opinion: Divergent Views on Olympic Bids
The results from Hamburg have sparked varied reactions, particularly in online forums. Comment sections on news articles reveal differing perspectives on the desirability of hosting the Olympic Games.
- Sani Bonani (1 hour ago): “Too bad, I would have liked to see an Olympiad for the woke Hanseaten.”
- KUMMUC (2 hours ago): “The citizens of Hamburg are smarter than those in Munich. They decided against exorbitant costs, dirt, construction sites, and rising prices in their hometown.”
- Rigobert (3 hours ago): “Munich is the only Olympic candidate in Germany with international appeal.”
These comments underscore the complex public debate surrounding the financial implications, environmental impact, and international prestige associated with hosting the Olympic Games.
The outcome of Hamburg’s referendum now places greater focus on Munich’s bid, as the Bavarian capital emerges as a stronger contender in the domestic selection process. The DOSB’s upcoming decision will be a pivotal moment for Germany’s Olympic aspirations.
