Hamburg Records Over 5,000 Marriages in 2024, Highest Since 2019
Hamburg, January 13, 2026 – The number of marriages in Hamburg in 2024 significantly exceeded the previous year’s figures, reaching a five-year high. According to data released by the Statistical Office Nord, 5,320 couples exchanged vows, an increase of 821, or 18.3%, compared to 2023. This marks the highest number of marriages recorded in the city since 2019, when 6,065 unions were solemnized.
Monthly Trends in Marriages
The data reveals a clear seasonal pattern in marriage registrations. The month of August saw the highest number of weddings, with 601 couples getting married. Conversely, January recorded the fewest ceremonies, with only 228 marriages taking place. This trend is consistent with historical patterns, where summer months are typically more popular for weddings.
Divorce Rates Show Slight Decrease
While marriages were on the rise, the number of divorces in Hamburg experienced a slight decline in 2024. The total number of divorces decreased from 2,619 in 2023 to 2,613 in 2024. This marginal reduction indicates a relatively stable divorce rate despite the increase in new marriages.
Of the divorces finalized in 2024, 1,846 children were affected. This statistic highlights the societal impact of marital dissolutions on families. Furthermore, the Statistical Office Nord reported that more than one in five (22.1%) of the divorced marriages had lasted for at least 20 years, suggesting that a significant portion of long-term relationships also concluded in divorce during the year.
Contextualizing the Figures
The increase in marriage rates in Hamburg could be attributed to various factors, including a potential post-pandemic rebound as couples who postponed their weddings due to restrictions are now proceeding with their plans. The city’s vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings may also contribute to its appeal as a place for starting a family.
The slight decrease in divorces, alongside the significant rise in marriages, paints a picture of evolving social dynamics within Hamburg. These statistics provide valuable insights for policymakers and social researchers, offering a glimpse into the current state of family formation and dissolution in the Hanseatic city.
The Statistical Office Nord continues to monitor these trends, providing essential demographic data for regional planning and public understanding.
