Hamburg to Construct New Elbdome Multifunctional Arena in Rothenburgsort
Hamburg, June 10 – The city of Hamburg is set to gain a new multifunctional arena, dubbed the ‘Elbdome’, in the Rothenburgsort district. The facility, which will be located on the site of the New Huckepackbahnhof, is projected to open in the early 2030s and will have a capacity for approximately 9,000 spectators. The project has been in the planning stages for several years, and a significant step forward has now been taken with the initiation of a tender process.
Tender Launched for Private Developer
The municipal Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft has launched a tender seeking a private developer to undertake the construction of the arena, situated near the Elbe bridges. This development marks a crucial phase in bringing the Elbdome to fruition. The arena is envisioned to become the new home court for the Hamburg Towers, the city’s basketball Bundesliga team, whose current venue in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, with its 3,000-seat capacity, has become too small to accommodate their growing fan base.
Beyond Basketball: A Venue for Diverse Events
Beyond its primary role as a basketball arena, the Elbdome is designed to host a wide array of events, including concerts, cultural performances, and trade fairs. This multifunctional approach aims to establish the venue as a central hub for entertainment and events in Hamburg. In addition to the arena itself, plans for the New Huckepackbahnhof site in Rothenburgsort include the construction of a large public parking garage with 1,000 spaces, addressing potential parking needs for attendees.
Construction Expected to Commence in Late 2020s
If the search for a suitable developer and operator is successful and proceeds swiftly, construction work on the Elbdome is anticipated to begin in the late 2020s. The arena is then expected to commence operations in the early 2030s, offering a modern and expansive venue for sports and cultural events in Hamburg.
Context: Hamburg Towers’ Recent Success and Urban Development
The announcement of the new arena comes shortly after the Hamburg Towers secured their place in the Bundesliga with an overtime victory against the Rostock Seawolves, highlighting the team’s need for a larger home venue. This project is part of a broader urban development initiative in the Billebogen area of Hamburg. Interestingly, the plans for the quarter near the Billebecken have been adjusted, allowing the Bille rowing club, with its approximately 200 rowers, to retain its current location, avoiding a previously considered relocation.
Wider Infrastructure Developments in Hamburg
The Elbdome project is one of several significant infrastructure developments currently underway or planned for Hamburg. Recently, the winning design for the new Köhlbrandbrücke was presented by the Senate, envisioning a higher and longer bridge. Furthermore, the city is preparing for extensive railway construction work during the summer holidays, which will lead to significant disruptions in train services, including cancellations and rerouting of long-distance, regional, and S-Bahn trains. These developments underscore Hamburg’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure and enhance its urban landscape.
The city’s financial senator, Dressel, has also recently warned of potential
