Hamburg Wasser Reports Over 100 Million Euros Profit in 2025, Plans Major Investments
Hamburg, June 10, 2026 – Hamburg Wasser, the city’s municipal water company, announced on Wednesday that it generated a profit of 113.8 million euros in 2025. This represents an increase of 7.6 million euros compared to the previous year. The company’s consolidated revenue also saw a rise, climbing from 673.5 million euros to 701.6 million euros.
In 2025, Hamburg Wasser supplied 2.3 million people with 117.6 million cubic meters of water and treated 156.5 million cubic meters of wastewater. The sale of drinking water contributed 36.2 million euros to the company’s earnings, a slight decrease of 1.3 million euros from the previous year. This surplus is directed into the Hamburg city budget. The revenue from the wastewater division, amounting to 76.9 million euros, will be allocated to reserves for the sewerage system and the sewage treatment plant.
Kuhmühlenstammsiel Undergoes Extensive Renovation
Currently, the Kuhmühlenstammsiel at Baumwall is undergoing extensive renovation. Constructed in 1903, this siel is one of the city’s largest wastewater channels. The approximately 530-meter-long section runs beneath the U3 elevated railway viaduct and transports wastewater and rainwater from Uhlenhorst, Hohenfelde, St. Georg, Hafencity, and Neustadt to the Hamburg sewage treatment plant.
The old, brick-built siel is receiving a new interior. So-called pipe sections, each with an inner diameter of three meters, are being pushed piece by piece into the old structure. “This is just one of our methods to renew the siels quickly and cost-effectively,” explained Martin Gerhardt, Managing Director of Hamburg Wasser, at the annual press conference.
1.15 Billion Euros Earmarked for Future Investments
In addition to the renovation of old wastewater channels, approximately 270 kilometers of drinking water pipelines will be renewed in the coming years. The water supplier invests up to 50 million euros annually in the drinking water network alone. Hamburg Wasser plans to invest a total of 1.15 billion euros in networks, facilities, and new technologies by 2029. By 2035, around 270 kilometers of drinking water pipelines are slated for renewal.
The next major project in the renovation of Hamburg’s sewerage system is the Kuhmühlenstammsiel, one of the city’s largest and oldest wastewater siele. Hamburg Wasser is also employing a special technique for new wastewater pipelines in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel, using frozen pipes to accelerate the construction process.
