Hamburg’s Inheritance Tax Revenue Soars, Fueling Reform Debate

Hamburg, March 4 – Hamburg’s tax revenues from inheritances and gifts are experiencing a significant surge, with the city collecting a record 436 million euros last year. This marks a substantial increase from approximately 218 million euros a decade ago, according to figures released by Hamburg’s financial authorities. While the numbers fluctuate, the overall trend indicates a steady rise in these tax contributions.

Nearly Five Billion Euros Collected Since 2016, But More Could Have Been

Since 2016, residents of Hamburg have collectively paid nearly five billion euros in inheritance and gift taxes. However, the financial authorities revealed on Wednesday that this figure could have been considerably higher. Exemptions for particularly large estates have resulted in a significant loss of potential revenue. In Hamburg alone, there have been 25 such cases since 2016, leading to a shortfall of almost 860 million euros for the city.

Hamburg’s Government Pushes for Inheritance Tax Reform

Hamburg’s red-green state government has been advocating for a reform of the inheritance tax at the federal level for years. This call is echoed by the Left Party in Hamburg. Conversely, the CDU argues that tax exemptions, particularly for business assets, help preserve jobs. The AfD, meanwhile, views such reforms as an attack on the middle class.

Economic Experts Call for More Uniform Taxation

Adding to the debate, the German Council of Economic Experts recently urged for reforms. In their annual report, they emphasized the need for a more uniform taxation of all types of assets, aiming for a fairer and more consistent approach across the board.
