Heatwave Halts Rail Works Between Hamburg and Hanover

Lüneburg, June 25 – Critical rail maintenance work on the vital Hanover-Hamburg railway line is facing significant delays due to an ongoing heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days. This extreme weather prevents specific construction activities, primarily welding, from being carried out, raising concerns about the project’s timely completion.

Project manager Stephan Fabig informed NDR Niedersachsen on Tuesday that certain tasks, such as welding seams, are impossible to perform when rail temperatures exceed 35 degrees Celsius. “The rail temperatures have a maximum allowable temperature, which is 35 degrees Celsius. That’s the limit because we need a certain gap for the production of the weld seam, and it’s about the expansion and shrinkage of the steel rails,” Fabig explained.

Schedule Shift Expected

While Deutsche Bahn initially stated that the renovation work on the Hanover-Hamburg route was progressing well and on schedule, the current heatwave could now cause delays. The extensive renovation was originally set to conclude on July 10. The full extent of the delay remains unclear as the heatwave persists.

Night Work and Noise for Lüneburg Residents

To mitigate the impact of the heat on construction workers’ health, Deutsche Bahn is shifting heavy work to late evening and night hours. This change, however, means that residents living near the railway tracks in the Lüneburg area should prepare for increased noise levels during the night. A railway spokesperson confirmed that noise levels might exceed the 60-decibel limit in some areas. Deutsche Bahn has offered alternative accommodation to affected residents as a compensatory measure.

General Overhaul: What Rail Passengers in Northern Germany Need to Know

The Hamburg-Berlin line has been fully operational since mid-June, with bus replacement services having concluded. However, construction continues on the Hamburg-Hanover section, impacting travel for many commuters and long-distance passengers. Passengers are advised to check for updated travel information regularly.

Protests Against New Rail Line

Separately, approximately 500 individuals in Meckelfeld staged a protest against the proposed new Hanover-Hamburg rail line. Organized by the “Trassenalarm” citizens’ initiative, demonstrators carried banners to express their opposition to the project.

Further Restrictions for S-Bahn Hanover

Additional construction work is also causing further disruptions to the S-Bahn Hanover lines between Celle and Hanover. Critics argue that these ongoing works are worsening the existing replacement transport services, causing inconvenience for daily commuters.
