Munich, July 28 – The Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich has announced that elephant cow Temi is pregnant, with a new calf expected in August 2027. This eagerly anticipated arrival brings a renewed sense of hope to the zoo’s elephant house, especially after the loss of young bull Otto approximately one year ago.

New Hope for the Hellabrunn Herd

The zoo confirmed on Monday that Temi’s pregnancy has been known since spring. This will be the first addition to the Asian elephant herd in Munich since the death of Otto, Temi’s second-born, in June 2025. Otto succumbed to a herpesvirus infection, a significant blow to the highly social elephant family.

Following Otto’s death, the remaining five elephants at Hellabrunn faced a challenging period of reorientation. Elephants are known for their complex social structures and strong, long-term bonds, typically living in family units led by an experienced matriarch. The loss of a herd member can significantly alter the entire social dynamic, causing unrest and confusion.

Herd Dynamics Stabilizing Ahead of New Arrival

While the period after Otto’s passing saw some instability in the elephant house, the situation has reportedly improved. A zoo spokesperson noted that although the elephant cows occasionally need to be separated, keepers have found ways to facilitate their gradual re-approach and interaction.

The current pregnancy and Temi’s altered hormone balance are expected to further influence the herd’s dynamics, potentially fostering a more harmonious environment. The team at Hellabrunn is thrilled with the news. “After the challenges faced by the elephant group last year, we are very happy about this development,” said Zoo Director Rasem Baban. The expected birth date in August 2027 was determined through blood and urine sample analysis.

The Importance of Elephant Calves for Conservation

The arrival of a new elephant calf is not only a cause for celebration at the zoo but also plays a crucial role in conservation efforts for Asian elephants, which are an endangered species. Each successful birth contributes to the genetic diversity and overall health of the captive population, which can serve as a safeguard against extinction in the wild.

The Hellabrunn Zoo is part of international breeding programs aimed at ensuring the survival of endangered species. The careful management of these programs, including monitoring pregnancies and ensuring optimal conditions for mother and calf, is paramount.

Future Plans and Public Engagement

The zoo is expected to provide further updates on Temi’s pregnancy and the preparations for the new arrival as the due date approaches. Public interest in the elephant house is likely to increase significantly, and the zoo will undoubtedly engage visitors with educational content about elephant behavior, conservation, and the journey of the new calf.

This upcoming birth underscores the dedication of institutions like Hellabrunn Zoo to wildlife conservation and education, offering a unique opportunity for the public to connect with these magnificent animals and understand the importance of their protection.
