Homeless in Berlin Suffer from Heat – Call for Help Issued

Berlin, June 19 – High temperatures pose a serious threat to the lives of homeless individuals in Berlin, making public vigilance and assistance more crucial than ever. This urgent appeal comes from Berlin’s Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe, who highlights the severe dangers faced by this vulnerable population.

“Lack of sheltered retreats, insufficient access to drinking water, and continuous exposure to the heat significantly increase the risk of dehydration and circulatory problems,” explained the SPD politician. Kiziltepe urged Berlin residents to be attentive to those sitting unprotected in the sun and appearing helpless. “Approach people at eye level, ask if they need help, and if necessary, call an ambulance,” the Senator advised.

Increased Funding for Heat Aid Programs

The Senate Social Administration announced it is supporting various initiatives and projects under its “Heat Aid” program with approximately 370,000 euros. This represents an increase of 70,000 euros compared to the 2025 heat season. These programs, which will run until the end of August, offer essential services such as safe retreats, beverages, food, showers, and consultation services for those in need. Additionally, washing facilities and basic medical first aid are provided. Mobile teams are also deployed across the city to reach individuals directly.

Rising Homelessness Figures

According to the Federal Statistical Office, as of January 31, 2025, approximately 474,700 people nationwide were housed in emergency shelters. This figure marks an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year (2024: 439,500). The Federal Office suggests that this rise might be attributed to a statistical effect. Specifically for Berlin, 53,600 homeless individuals were registered as of the January 2025 deadline.

Community Action is Vital

The call for public assistance underscores the collective responsibility of the community in safeguarding its most vulnerable members during extreme weather conditions. The simple act of offering water or checking on someone can make a significant difference in preventing heat-related emergencies.

The city’s efforts, bolstered by increased funding and expanded services, aim to mitigate the severe health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures. However, the active participation of citizens remains a critical component in ensuring the safety and well-being of the homeless population.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage anyone who encounters a homeless person in distress to offer help or contact emergency services immediately.
