‘Pik As’ Homeless Shelter Reopens in Hamburg After Extensive Renovation
Hamburg, February 22, 2026 – The ‘Pik As’ homeless shelter, a vital institution in Hamburg’s support system for the homeless, is preparing to return to its newly renovated premises on Neustädter Straße at the end of March. This move follows a three-year period during which the shelter operated from a temporary location on Eiffestraße in Hamburg-Hamm.
The facility, situated between Gänsemarkt and Neustadt, has undergone extensive modernization, including significant energy efficiency upgrades. It will continue to provide 330 beds in two- and three-person rooms. A notable feature of the renovated shelter is the allocation of a small number of rooms specifically for homeless individuals with dogs, addressing a critical need for pet owners.
New Long-Term Care Units for Elderly and Infirm
A significant addition to the ‘Pik As’ is a new building section dedicated to providing long-term accommodation for 33 elderly, and in some cases, infirm homeless individuals. These residents will have their own private rooms where they can spend their later years, receiving all necessary care and support. This initiative aims to offer a stable and dignified living environment for a particularly vulnerable group within the homeless community.
Enhanced Medical and Addiction Support Services
The newly reopened ‘Pik As’ will also feature a specialized medical practice. During its time at the temporary Eiffestraße location, this practice served over 700 patients last year, highlighting the critical demand for healthcare services among the homeless. Furthermore, the Neustädter Straße facility will introduce addiction counseling services, a much-needed resource to address substance abuse issues prevalent among the homeless population. Plans for additional support services are still under development, as confirmed by the Hamburg Senate in response to an inquiry from the CDU.
CDU Raises Concerns Over Unfinalized Plans
The CDU has expressed criticism regarding the lack of clarity on further aid offerings, just weeks before the planned reopening of this important facility. They emphasize the need for comprehensive planning to ensure that ‘Pik As’ can effectively meet the diverse needs of its residents.
Renovation Milestones and Future Outlook
The renovation project reached a significant milestone with its topping-out ceremony on April 16, 2025, marking the completion of the structural work. The extensive renovation has focused on creating smaller two- and three-person rooms, aiming to provide a more comfortable and private environment for the residents.
The return of ‘Pik As’ to its original, modernized location is expected to significantly enhance the support infrastructure for homeless individuals in Hamburg. With improved facilities and expanded services, the shelter aims to offer a more holistic approach to addressing homelessness, encompassing not only basic needs but also healthcare, long-term care, and addiction support.
